A couple of things here.

First - is Meryl Streep over-rated?

Second - does it concern you that the next President of the United States of America has a skin so thick that he feels that he needs to defend himself in this manner?

Are we now walking towards a time when the leader of the free world has the sensibilities of a 13 year old school child?

Why is he doing this?

Seriously...I know there are some on here revere Trump in the same way that they revere Katie Hopkins, Jeremy Clarkson and Tyson Fury - as being paragons as straight talking, but what on earth is he doing responding to this kind of criticism?

I think Bazile has got the essence of this. If a Hollywood icon wants to make a veiled reference to bad behaviour, they can. If you are President Elect, and you want to respond by denigrating her proven and awarded acting skills- you can't, for two reasons. One is that you are proving yourself an idiot by attacking her proven track record in her job, and two...

SP, //I think in the grand scheme of things, that's pretty much acceptable.//

I don't. My post at 18.15 stands.
The stupidity of this is, Trump probably had no opinion of Ms. Streep as an actress until she pointed out just one of his dozens of odious mutterings - then suddenly, she is a 'mediocre actress'.

Clearly she is not, but he calls her one because he is childish and goes ner-ner-ner when people upset him.

That's something his 'people' need to get a grip of.

Oh, and Twitter is not the way national leaders covey their thoughts - it has no dignity.
Does anyone - even his supporters - deny that President-Elect Trump behaves like a bully?

Does anyone deny that Streep's speech was attacking - in a respectful and limited way - that behaviour?

If your answer to either of the above is "yes" - please explain why.

If your answer to both of the above is "no" - what is your problem with Streep's speech?
I'm not a supporter of his and yes I have no doubt he is a bully (I bet most presidents are even the nice ones)

My problem with the speech. I will start with

She mentioned
New Jersey, South Carolina, Florida, Italy, Jerusalem, Ethiopia, Ireland, Canada, Kenya, India, and Tasmania.

Has Trump called for a ban on people from any of these places?
I have not the slightest doubt that Trump was mocking the disabled.

ts perfectly clear from the video evidence that he is doing exactly that.

What a truly dreadful man.
Trump had a similar twitter spat with Jon Stewart.

Trump invariably acknowledges wrong-doing in either of two ways, "I didn't do it.", and when proven otherwise, "It wasn't wrong.", and as often as not . . . both ways.
She has sat on this since 24th Nov 2015, (despite saying it happened 'this year') so forgive me if I think she is erm ... acting

''It kinda broke my heart and I still can't get it out of my head.''

As a Beatles fan she must have been nursing that broken heart for many, many years.

I find mocking disabled people vile.

I also find giving standing ovations dedicated to convicted child rapists vile.

mibn2cweus....we should admit at this point, that no matter what he said in the lead up to the election, millions of Americans still voted for him.

He has proven that whatever he says, lots of people will just ignore the words and cheer him regardless.

Its my solemn belief that those people will continue to support him, even when the various disasters that lay ahead happen. And they will.
No platform should be exempt from the moral necessity to point out immorality, wherever it rears its ugly head.
All you virtue-signalling bleeding heart liberals please watch this.

A similar video was ignore when I posted it earlier, Khandro (as were my other points)

^ Plus;
Trump may turn out to be the worst President of all time, but please remember Bill Clinton RAPED Juanita Broderick and Hillary tried to intimidate her into silence, Obama signed into law the Indefinite Detention Act and President Cheney sent us looking for weapons of mass destruction that didn't exist and led us all into war in Iraq.
By the way, that horrible sexist Trump had a woman run his Presidential campaign and had a woman in charge of building Trump Tower and has appointed three excellent women in his team.
Ms. Streep, please stick to your PLAY-acting and let the grownups try to do their job.
Mibs, //No platform should be exempt from the moral necessity to point out immorality, wherever it rears its ugly head.//

I disagree. Immorality didn’t rear its ugly head on that occasion until the recipients of awards introduced it. There is a time and place for everything. I'm not a fan of Trump but whatever he is, whatever he’s said, whatever he’s done and whatever people think of him this was not a political assembly. I was disappointed in Hugh Laurie at that event too. Both he and Meryl Streep should, in my opinion, have risen above it. I’ve no doubt that if either of them wanted to register their disapproval of Trump any newspaper would have been very willing to interview them and publish the result. As for Meryl Streep’s tears, people should remember that actors are actors – and she’s particularly skilled at her craft.

I doubt MS will feel the need to post on twitter to bemoan what DT has said about her , I'd think she has more intelligence and class. About 2 a.m. appears to be his "twitter time " :-)
Talbot I watched your video and thanks for posting I hadn't seen it before.

Kromo, as I have said earlier on this thread @ 16.40, my problem is that she saw fit to make this speech at all on this occasion. Oh and I'm not a Trump fan either, he should have risen above it.
What I would actually like to see is a A-lister who voted Clinton come out and say something like

I'm no fan of Trump but he is now our president, let us get behind him until he lets us down
Actors have often used award ceremonies as opportunities to express their political views. M Streep has done nothing new or wrong.
-Talbot-, absolutely right. That's the only sensible course of action. He's there and, short of someone shooting him, he'll be there for the next four years.
