While a difference in skin colour should not be ignored, it should not be the determining factor, though they should be aware that an interracial couple, and especially their children, may face discrimination and ridicule, and they should be prepared for this (particularly in the southern states of America).
Indeed gness.
My mother and sisters took vehemently against my relationship with a barmaid divorcee with two small children.
Thirty-six years later, we have been married for thirty years, and my wife has been a barmaid, teacher, Deputy Head, Head, and Ofsted and ISA Inspector.
I still don't speak to my family.
I would advise an parent to be very careful of trying to enforce views on adult children.

murraymints - //well if it is so clear cut and I had been the daughter..then I would have put stuff on hold in an effort to sort stuff before making life changing decisions....responsibility goes with age regardless of race etc //
Perhaps she underestimated the strength and vehemence of her parents' racism? It is nice if you can think the best of your family.

/// that applies to any couple anywhere of any colour. I don't think anyone embarks on a relationship thinking 'Hmm, there may be 'cultural difference ahead here ...' - if they did, the relationship is unlikely to get to the point where 'cultural differences' matter anyway. ///
And neither did I say they do, so please don't keep pointing something out that I have never said.
/// You talk about 'clash of cultures' as though an American woman has taken up with a Amazon tribesman who thinks an eclipse is the end of the world! ///
You are always going on about people saying or assuming things you have not said, but here once again you are using sensationalistic language such as "a Amazon tribesman" (even though the chap in question doesn't seem to possess a South American ancestry) so as to try and get a certain point over that is visual in your mind alone.
And what astronomy has got to do with any thing, over to your mind once again.
/// This couple are from the same country for heaven's sake! Your notion of 'cultural differences' is seriously out of touch with
reality. ///
Pardon me if I inject a little common sense here, maybe they are from the same country, but for example there are Pakistanis in this country also, but our cultures are miles apart.
/// The days when black people drank from different water fountains and used different toilets are actually gone now - so there is no point in perpetuating the racist notion that 'black people are not like us' - because they are like
us! ///
You are off again is there no end to your madness, who mentioned any of those things, water fountains, toilets, not like us?
These are yet more stereotyping visions that are once again forming solely into that mind of yours.
I will no bore the other ABers with the rest of your claptrap, because I am even getting bored myself.
Enjoy the rest of the day.

aog, //the main problem is the clash of cultures//
You’re missing the point entirely. The man in question is American. What makes you think that, because he is black, he must necessarily differ culturally from white Americans? Would you say that President Obama and his wife, Michelle, or Colin Powell, a four-star general in the US army and ex-US Secretary of State, differ culturally from white Americans?
