i saw this on the news thread earlier, doesn't seem right at all. surely these products are essential, and not too expensive. perhaps they could be supplied on the NHS to poorer families.

And the males slating these women probably don't know that periods can be very irregular, so very hard to budget for.
quite !!! notwithstanding the need for pain management !
Financial hardship? Budget for?
Missed my post, did you? Single mother+5 kids=£590pw in benefits.
Don't believe me, go on the benefit's calculator and check it out.
I told them my rent was £100pw and ignored dozens of 'requests' to claim 'extras'.
Sam - you're missing the point.
that is only one case ! there are many many people living on very much less who have to make choices...as Ummmm said not just those on benefits...
The holier than thou crowd on here make me laugh. Always want to give more money to everyone. (as long as it doesn't cost them an extra halfpenny)
sam..that is exactly the smug reaction I was referring to !....I'm all right Jack..unless you have walked in the shoes of those in real hardship.....do not pass juddgement
Instead of berating people less gullible than yourselves, virtue signallers can show how much they care here,

No doubt putting your hand in your own pocket will prove just as popular as putting it in mine.
And if I showed you a photo of my shoes, minty, you'd start a collection to buy me a new pair.
sam as it happens I donate weekly to the food bank and always include toiletries and tampons...as I said do NOT judge ..I am not berating I am commenting that those with no experience of hardship have no right to voice their stereotyped and biased opinions..you freely admit you are not prepared to help others in need..well that of course is your right..but it does not sit well with me..

I too donate to my local Food Bank, and up until now have only given food. But your idea of donating tampons sounds like a good idea, if only I knew which ones to get ! I shall take advice today from the Trussell Trust that runs my local Bank.
Don't think I'd want a plate of tampons for dinner.
Not even farm fresh.
A troll isn't someone who disagrees with you. Nor are they racists, bigots, xenophobes and all the other insults you fling around this site with apparent impunity.
The danger is in assuming that people are organising their finances well and that they really can’t afford necessities and so the answer is to throw more money at them. A single parent on benefits with five children? There are thousands of people in a similar situation across the rest of the country who seem to manage rather better than the family in Leeds. People have to take responsibility for themselves. Menstruation is not an illness.

Mamyalynne, ‘rags’ are washable.
most supermarkets sell their own brand budget tampons Mikey...
It is actually quite shocking that such personal items aren't freely available for those that cant afford to buy them. I remember my girls starting their periods, whilst they spoke freely to me about it, they would have been mortified not to have had sanitary products readily available. I used to buy them myself when I noticed they were running low in the bathroom. Such a difficult time for some.
Mikey, who are you calling trolls?
ummm - "And the males slating these women probably don't know that periods can be very irregular, so very hard to budget for."

What complete nonsense.

1 - Being male does not mean we don't know about periods or their irregularities. That is incredibly arrogant.
2 - 16 sanitary towels are available in Asda for 70p - if you looked hard enough I'm sure cheaper ones could be found elsewhere - so not being able to budget is utter rubbish.

A thread that is about women doesn't mean men aren't allowed to comment and doesn't mean their comments are any less valid.

I don't 'buy' the comment that people are "too poor" to buy sanitary products. As NJ has pointed out more than once (but it appears to have conveniently fallen on deaf ears) the parent is receiving £75 for the child - plus all the other free money she'll be getting - so if they truly cannot afford sanitary products, then this is mis-management rather than being too poor (probably an argument for another thread, but given the generous benefits provided in this country (and they are generous), I do not believe that anybody is truly in 'poverty').
