Some Action Must Be Taken
After a terrorist attack, some people say that 'action must be taken', and that 'the West must wake up'.
These are abstracts - can anyone explain in (without the use of abstractions) what specifically they mean by 'action'.

At risk of sounding all " elitist".... The elephant in the room here is that very, very few of us are really qualified to make a judgement about effective security policies. It could be that "banning muslims" (to take a common example) or forcibly closing mosques would reduce our risk of terror attacks to 0. It's equally plausible that it wouldn't, because...

well, there's already a thread hereabouts saying mosques should be closed down or Islam should be banned altogether.
Even being crucified didn't deter early Christians, so I think that's angry Islamophobia rather than an actual solution.
There might be something to be said for better monitoring of people already on watch lists. I'm still not clear if yesterday's attacker was such a person, but I must admit my instant response was to wonder if he was.

I think most people mean :
1. Close all the mosques and islamic 'faith' schools
2. Require everyone in the UK to swear on a bible (and a koran if they must) that they are committed to the UK and its civilised values, that they renounce terrorism and will work pro-actively to root out terrorists
3. Deport (to somewhere hot and unpleasant) anyone who jibs at (2)
I think that would satisfy most people?
[ I would have said that I'm being "ironic and over-the-top" for effect - these days my belief in the possibility of a very significant percentage of muslims being part of a peaceful, multi-cultural UK is under so much pressure that I'm not sure about my views at all - beyond despair ]

You asked:
Do you think everything will turn out fine if we just sit back and wait for the Islamist terrorist to get bored of killing people, sp?
Not at all.
What I'm asking is what specifically needs to be done to, if not eradicate the threat - but to significantly reduce it.
sunny-dave has put forward some ideas, but I don't think that they would work.
If someone wants to commit an act of terrorism, promising that they won't isn't really going to make us safer.
Same with Islamic schools - if someone is going to be radicalised, the Internet has far more scope for access to fundamentalist materials.

That last paragraph was very brave of you , SD. Certainly not something I thought I would read from you, but I feel very much the same.
Calling everyone who shows open concern for what is happening ... bigots, racists, xenophobes etc may make the accuser feel superior but that doesn't stop the killing.

Sp,
'The West need to wake up' is a particularly pointless phrase.
It infers that the West is asleep. Does anyone really think that Theresa May, the Government, anyone is not aware of the danger from Islamic terrorists?
They are acutely aware, and are doing everything they possibly can to combat it.
Obviously I realise 'Wake up' is a euphemism for far right policies like deport all muslims, close all their mosques, bomb their countries, but still it doesn't make any sense. If we did all of that, we still wouldn't be safe.

Don't think this has even been reported by the BBC. Apparently happened 2 days ago.
BEIRUT (Reuters) - At least 33 people were killed in an airstrike that hit a school sheltering displaced people near the Islamic State-held city of Raqqa, a group that monitors the war in Syria said on Wednesday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it believed the strike was carried out by the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State.
