Nick Clegg: Why Did Ebbw Vale In Wales Vote Brexit?
http:// www.bbc .co.uk/ news/uk -394253 73
When I have said before, on AB, that xenophobia was the prime cause of the BREXIT vote, I have been howled down. But in this BBC report from South Wales, its clear that it was a very strong reason behind people voting to leave the EU, at least with older voters.
Even in a Town where there is little immigration, the fear of it persuaded people to vote OUT, even when it has benefited hugely from EU funding.
It make for interesting viewing !

I must admit that I can't see a problem with Polish supermarkets in Hereford, nor have I noticed it particularly resplendent with immigrants than most other towns, nor do they worry me, at all, but then I have a Romanian born partner. The lovely Polish lady at the garage ran after me the other day because I'd dropped my purse, they are just like us. They are just...

Generally speaking, people will vote for whatever suits them personally, which is understandable. As a rule, the areas that voted to lewave are areas of deprivation rather than areas with high migration, London being a prime example of the opposite case. In other words, loss-aversion rules, but if you feel you have nothing to lose ...
The tragedy is that those people will STILL be or feel deprived post-Brexit.

Mikey, this country is FULL, the NHS Is overworked, the schools are overcrowded, the local Heath centres are packed out, & they are still letting them in no matter what Race / Colour before we start, how is it the population of the UK can see the problem & the stupid Gov can not? Look at the size of the UK In comparison to Europe, any more we will be sinking, lets see the regular " No it is not" party say otherwise.
Naomi is right there is a difference between xenophobia and concern about migration.
The link actually showed concern rather than xenophobia. Illegal immigrants, funding shiny new buildings that have little benefit, get back laws, those with the better qualifications and as other countries do, have a system for getting the best or appropriate people.
That is not xenophobia.
But people like Mikey will snatch the words they want to scream about and run with it none the less.
All we have to fear is fear itself. Who was it that said that?

I am not a xenophobe but I think we should be careful who and who we let it and many foreigners we let in.
We have a strong British culture throughout the UK and many of us would like to keep our culture.
I was walking through Hereford a few day ago I was within sight of three Polish supermarkets and there are many more Polish shops in Hereford and there are clearly many Poles living in and around Hereford and they are beginning to shape the area to suit them, if you see a group of youngsters stood anywhere around the town talking, I would bet they are Polish or at least foreign. It just getting a bit too much!
I am more than happy to see foreigners come to our towns and cities but we need workers and people that will contribute and fit in with our cultures and not turn our land into the one they left because they didn't like it.

If you listen to the older people being interviewed, its quite clear what their objection to our continuing membership of the EU is about, and its this "immigration problem" ....the Romanians were mentioned, for instance. But Ebbw Vale has very little immigration.
What it has, in commons with lots of other places like it, is masses of middle aged people, with no qualifications, or skills, other than what was required in the huge steel works that used to exist there. Those places were left behind when the industrialisation policies of the 1980's were put into place
But it has had huge infrastructure improvements, all largely funded by money from Brussels, which is about to dry up for good.
Where will the funds come from in two years time ?
