When I have said before, on AB, that xenophobia was the prime cause of the BREXIT vote, I have been howled down. But in this BBC report from South Wales, its clear that it was a very strong reason behind people voting to leave the EU, at least with older voters.
Even in a Town where there is little immigration, the fear of it persuaded people to vote OUT, even when it has benefited hugely from EU funding.
It make for interesting viewing !

I must admit that I can't see a problem with Polish supermarkets in Hereford, nor have I noticed it particularly resplendent with immigrants than most other towns, nor do they worry me, at all, but then I have a Romanian born partner. TWR....that doesn't explain why so many of the older people voted for BREXIT in Ebbw Vale. I think the younger people that Clegg interviewed probably had it right.....people were afraid of immigrants, even when there aren't any nearby.
But Cleggs report clearly shows that xenophobia was a prime cause of the Brexit vote, something I have always suspected, though it was hotly denied by many on AB.

Re Polish shops

So what is your "realistic concern" about then? Too many types of rye bread, perhaps, or the wrong sort of yeast :-)
Over the years I've been amazed at the number of Asian restaurants that have appeared in our town, but we're still largely white, tight and outa sight :-)

The argument was that with all the money put into the area, none of it. Created new industry or jobs. All the shiny new buildings were built by cheap foreign labour, the dragon sculpture and new bollards looked nice, but that was all. The sixth formers spoke sense regarding immigration , but I wonder, with all their qualifications,what jobs would there be for them? I expect they will all leave the area. Earlier generations already have,which is why there was an elderly population who have been totally letdown by successive governments and the EU.

Its difficult to replace a huge industry like the steel works that totally dominated the town. There has been some progress in the Valleys, in attracting new jobs, although not as much as is needed. My point is that it was EU money that allowed any infrastructure improvements to be made in the first place.
By the way....don't too get disparaging about the "shiny new buildings"....they include a brand new school and a hospital.....hardly a waste of money I would have thought.

Mikey, the ""town"" I live in has 10 Foreign owned takaways, 4 Idian Restaurants, 3 Chinese take aways, 4 owned Chinese chippies, population 14,765, one large Asian owned garage, 2 chemist's that Asian owned, have I missed something here? people & the public are greatly concerned with the influx of immigrants, it's nothing to do whether they are Pink / Black / Yellow / Purple, we are FULL, how much more notice will this government take notice, we are bloody FULL. even an idiot can see that.

My concern is the face of our high streets changing, the sheer number of Polish shops to accommodate the sheer numbers of Poles. If the Romanians and the Indians etc etc. all started opening up their own supermarkets at the same rate we would be hard pushed to buy English food in our own towns.
