Nick Clegg: Why Did Ebbw Vale In Wales Vote Brexit?
http:// www.bbc .co.uk/ news/uk -394253 73
When I have said before, on AB, that xenophobia was the prime cause of the BREXIT vote, I have been howled down. But in this BBC report from South Wales, its clear that it was a very strong reason behind people voting to leave the EU, at least with older voters.
Even in a Town where there is little immigration, the fear of it persuaded people to vote OUT, even when it has benefited hugely from EU funding.
It make for interesting viewing !

I must admit that I can't see a problem with Polish supermarkets in Hereford, nor have I noticed it particularly resplendent with immigrants than most other towns, nor do they worry me, at all, but then I have a Romanian born partner. The lovely Polish lady at the garage ran after me the other day because I'd dropped my purse, they are just like us. They are just...

"My concern is the face of our high streets changing, the sheer number of Polish shops to accommodate the sheer numbers of Poles. If the Romanians and the Indians etc etc. all started opening up their own supermarkets at the same rate we would be hard pushed to buy English food in our own towns.
I can explain it for you but I cant understand it for you!! "
I do understand it: I call it xenophobia, you call it "realistic concern".
We'll just have to agree to differ on that :-)

not sure how big Ebbw vale is but our relatives live in a sleepy English backwater, where the Polish arrived en masse - they have done the same, set up Polish shops for the Polish community, and changed the place for good. Not to mention the problems of alcohol abuse that many have brought with them, that was from the local constabulary report last year.
some changes are welcome and some are not.

As Emmie has explained, I am white and I have not problems with other white people, or even "white" British people AOG. In the same way that I don't have a problems with any other race, colour or creed.
But where do "white" British people come into this debate ?
All I have done is pointed out that in Ebbw Vale, from the evidence of this link at least, people voted for BREXIT, because of immigrants, even though immigration does not appear to be an issue in the constituency.

Neil Hamilton, UKIP Welsh Assembly group leader, said 23 June is Britain's 'Independence Day'
Leave has won the EU referendum campaign in Wales - and across the UK - with all Welsh council areas declared.
854,572 (52.5%) voters in Wales chose to leave the EU, compared with 772,347 (47.5%) supporting Remain.
Welsh Conservative leader and Leave supporter Andrew RT Davies said Welsh politics had changed forever but Labour's Lord Hain said there would be "tragic" consequences.

Immigrants are not going to come near Ebbw Vale: to do what exactly?
That is the thing: if there's nothing to be there for, then no one is going to come, And the people who are left behind are wondering why the world has left them behind. Very understandable that they should be cross and want out of the EU perhaps: but it is not the EU's fault, and leaving the EU will not help.

The High Street everywhere has changed as each immigrant group has arrived, and we now say 'As English as fish and chips'- when actually that was introduced to the UK during the 19th century by Eastern European Jews :)
