I see the usual are jumping on the band wagon.

It is not the NHS that is affected it is some of the Trusts that have not been run properly that have been hit. A patch was issued in March from Microsoft, it appears many didnt implement it. It also is emerging that some trusts are still using XP - unsupported by Microsoft.
In addition it seems that trusts are spending very little on cyber security, some a bit fat zero.

And where are the backups and DR contingency? If we did this in the Banking we would all be fired and the authorities would have managers up before the Court.

All this amounts to complete incompetency by the inflated management that do not have a clue what they are doing. Many trusts operate on an 'employ my family and mates' basis rather than on competence.

The NHS needs a big shake up and clear out of the garbage employed in the management, not more money that this incompetent overpaid bunch of idiots would just squander anyway..

I noted it happened earlier in the week.

But back to the issue at hand - I don't understand how this happened. With ransomware attacks, you have to open a link on your PC, which then downloads the malware.

From what I have read, this sounds like a coordinated virus attack, where PCs were crashing with this message even if no link had been clicked.

Apparently this was possible because codes were stolen from the US security services.

Cybersecurity experts said the malicious software works by exploiting a flaw in Microsoft software that was described in NSA documents stolen from the agency and leaked publicly in April by a criminal group called Shadow Brokers.

Remember last year when a whole bunch of people wanted Apple to create a special version of iOS for the U.S. government, under the promise that it would never escape their safe hands and get into the wild?

What happened yesterday is exactly why I argued that it was a stupid idea.

I'm saying that people reading a story need to look at more than the headline.

If they do not, and form an opinion based on a headline, they lose the right to criticise others for doing the same.
