##She was advised by prominent people in her Cabinet, that she couldn't win. ##

I remember that. Loyal colleagues like Ken Clarts and Douglas Turd.
Coal mines have been shut down by all Parties, for geological reasons, not ideological reasons. With the Tory Government of the time, it was sheer spite.
Teacup...don't forget tearful Gummer !
I’ve a sneaking suspicion that the AnswerBank is fast becoming the Darby & Joan Club!
@17.03 Errr wrong again, conveniently. For economical reasons. :))
Lol @ sheer spite!!!
Of course it was!!

I forget, just how much per day were the Coalmines being subsidised by?
I can sympathise to a large extent. Many communities were focused entirely around one ore two industries. When these industries closed people lost their focal point.
Teacup...they lost everything, not just jobs. The communities were effectively destroyed. Mass unemployment can bring about social devastation and in many cases, that is what happened.

Its a great pity that more people on here today can't feel some sympathy, instead of this complete lack of empathy.

If you're working for an industry that is not making a profit and is costing a fortune in subsidies to keep it open, it's just not going to last, is it?
Paying unemployment benefits has got to be more economic in the longrun.

Togo...why the nasty and personal attack ?
When "the man" cant play ball Mikey... then "play the man" I say :))
Bye bye Togo !
Plus I considered your "Its a great pity that more people on here today can't feel some sympathy, instead of this complete lack of empathy." as a personal attack. Does that scan for you?
Sympathy. Yeah, I feel a great deal of sympathy for the minewoekers union leaders who priced themselves out of the market. If the devastated communities wanted to vent their anger at anyone, it should have been Scargill and his cronies. Hard to get at Scargill tho in his union funded London pied-a-terre.
Whether or not you agreed with her politics, why did it always feel like you were getting told off by your headmistress when she came on TV!
well there's something for the pigeons to crap on or for the terrorists to try and blow her hair up.....
As I have argued many times on here Thatcher was a *** but Scargill was no better.

Coal was on a constant decline from the beginning of the 1900's
and was always going to be replaced ... but what about the steelworks and shipbuilding?
Thatcher decimated both of those industries, if she was the genius some of you make out she would have made us world leaders by turning round the fortunes of those industries.

Cruise ships are being turned out like no tomorrow many of those ships should have been built here.
Just to be clear Tony Blair's Labour didn't seem interested in reviving them either.
"....why did it always feel like you were getting told off by your headmistress when she came on TV!"

Because it was just that! Many people did need a telling off because they had the idea that the taxpayer was going to fund their existence in one way or another.

Apologies to Mikey about the "day without coal" accusation. I believe it was Eddie who brought that to our attention. I can't always be right :-)
