Of course I think you'll find it was the UK reversing swiftly back across the channel most recently :-)
As for the cheese munching wotsits/wotsit munching chewits or whatever, I think you'll find they have a larger army than the UK while Germany's would fit inside the Emirates stadium comfortably.
France has been involved in more peace keeping and conflict resolution situations than the UK in recent years, and they will soon be the only nuclear power in the EU AND on the Security council.
Whether a future "EU army" is a good thing is a matter for debate but the UK's reverse gear has probably made it more likely. Why do we care? We'll be trading furiously with New Zealand when the balloon goes up anyway :-)
