The one thing most important for the Tories to drop is the one which must have cost them the most votes. The idea of taking money off people after their death to cover their care costs, even if they were getting care in their own homes. This affects great numbers of pensioners, (who tend to be keener to vote than many others) and all their potential heirs. With the current value of houses, many hoped-for legacies would be eaten away. Tories have to remember that house-owners have usually been more likely to vote Tory than Labour.
