I heard her. Very wrong-headed thinking, designed to appease populist elements of her recent electorate. I think people have lost the argument when they use phrases like "anybody like that", "people like you" and so on. They may as well be saying "I'm not racist but ..."

For the record, I don't agree with her. But I can understand her frustration.
This Judge is used to dealing with complicated laws, and regulations...just the chap that is going to be needed to plough through all the fare and safety regulations, most of which seem to be in a mess. He has now said that may be able to expand the Enquiry, which should please the residents, as they need answers.

The inquiry judge is a sitting duck.
In fact, it wouldn't matter if it is was a duck chairing the inquest because of the number of people affected there will be folk who oppose whoever is chosen.
How do you measure 'empathy'? This judge is just as able to speak to people and didn't get where he did in life without having a logical brain.
It says a lot about some of the group who are refusing to co-operate with the inquiry. Furthermore, they comment about the narrowness of the parameters. This is hardly the judge's fault. He has to work within the remit given to him which he has been perfectly open and honest about.
Some of the residents don't like it but whoever is the judge, it doesn't change the facts!

A white MP suggests that a black judge cannot possibly understand the problems that posh white people suffer. Yeah Right. That would go down OK, I’m sure.
Emma Dent Coad needs to understand that the enquiry is not setting out to “understand people”. It will seek to find out the cause of the fire and why it developed into the major incident that was seen. It makes no difference who was in the building at the time. David Lammy, who has also weighed in along similar lines, is an excrement stirrer in the same way that his predecessor, Bernie Grant, was. His remarks are overtly racist and would not be tolerated, let alone listened to, were they to be uttered the other way round as I have outlined.

Why should it make any difference what nationality or colour the judge is? So long as she or he is suitable for the task then that's that. Non-white people seem to believe that white people cannot properly represent them or adjudicate on matters that effect them or in which they have been involved. As I have pointed out, if white people were to suggest something similar there would be outrage but when such a viewpoint expressed by non-white people the silence is deafening.
