Who is going to 'pay' them for not having sex for 3 months?

There are plenty of ways that we can encourage more blood donors, rather than take blood from high-risk groups. I used to give blood on a regular basis when I worked for BT. The Unit came to our place of work twice a year. From friends still working there, it now appears that the Unit no longer visits. Not sure why.

I think it just gives sex workers who have had a lean time of it recently, the option. I doubt it'd change anything in practice. It's not like you get paid a wad to donate.

"High risk" groups doesn't matter. It's either safe or it isn't and it's all tested anyway. So, why don't they test the donation? Why the risk?

You don't get paid to donate unless you consider tea, cake, crisps and biscuits as payment.

Not really. I mean how do you define a sex worker? How do you know that the person donating is or isn’t one and even if they aren’t, how do you know what kind of sex they have had, how frequently and how recently?

Yes, I did see that Mikkey, but whilst criticising Common Prositutes as you called them being allowed to donate, you seem to be ignoring the issue of Gay Men who must present a similar risk, as not all are in regular relationships.

No, not ignoring them. For the record, gay sex between males continues to be a major cause in the spread of AIDS. The same practise of anal sex is widespread in African countries between heterosexual people.

As long as a risk exists, then I would be happier to rely of existing regulations.

How do we know how much sex...protected or not...any person has who's donated.

Even as the contaminated blood scandal is in the news, 'experts' sail on blissfully with a remarkably relaxed attitude to similar problems waiting in the wings.

I'm sure it'll be fine though.

It doesnt bother me if the testing is good, what bothers me more is how difficult it is to get an appointment to give blood. I booked in Feb and the first slot was July 24th! Thats tomorrow but after all this time I cant go now because I was at the dentist earlier in the week and I have had some treatment on my foot which will prevent me giving blood for 7 days.

I went to rearrange but the next appointment is late October, ridiculous. Eventually I looked at other locations and found a slot in August in a village 12 miles away. I cant imagine many people being this determind, so dont worry too much about prostitutes bothering to make it through the system!

Maydup....I can give blood at my Docs. surgery, on two mornings a week, or I can go to the local hospital, where there is a walk-in phlebotomist dept.

Its seems very strange that you have to wait any time at all, let alone 5 months ?
