From hearing about it on the radio (I don't have access to the article itself, I believe they said it would do so if the Tory party didn't go ahead with it.

Of course, it's no secret that the Tories have been bitterly divided over Europe for decades and the whole cause of the Referendum was largely a civil war between at least three factions of the Tory party.

Anyway, party members tend to have more sense than cripple their career prospects over a single issue. Who else would they join to return to power; the Labour party ?

Oh. Sorry, I didn't realise that's what you were getting at.

For the next election? Probably not much. There'd be huge disagreement about what that opposition should be - whether it should be centrists like En Marche (which people like Cable obviously want) or "proper" conservatives (which people like Jacob Rees Mogg would probably want). An opposition which was actually divided into different parties would almost certainly guarantee a Labour win. We're in the realm of hypotheticals here as the Conservative party is not going to collapse, but if it did, my money would be on the centrists winning out maybe after the current election cycle, and a Blair-like government after that.

They are lesser certainly mikey but let us not forget that it was an unexpected surge from Labour voters that delivered brexit so the are not immune. Anyway it's all academic, A50 has been triggered we are on our way out.
