Out of interest, if a customer wanted to buy a ready made meal such as Medallions of beef in red wine sauce, and was refused by a Muslim checkout assistant as it contained alcohol - would people still defend this action?
Yes they could have done the but they chose not to and Aldi supported them. As for being stubborn, the employee was acting on his interpretation of his faith and it is one that Aldi chose to accommodate. Some others disagree but if you are that unhappy, take your business elsewhere.
NoM how would you feel about an eighteen-year old being refused that meal because they were under twenty-five?
What if a Muslim employee acting on his interpretation of his faith wanted to chop the hands off a thief nicking a pot noodle... would that be listened to or would Aldi tell them to buzzer off?

I mean it is in the Koran.
Are folk meant to know the sauce contains alcohol? I wouldn't have known.
If she is unhappy to work in a supermarket that sells alcohol, in a country where alcohol is part of every day life, perhaps she should quit her job and move back to her ancestral homeland.

As a paying customer, I expect to be served the products that I wish to buy.

I do not want someone else's beliefs imposed upon me during my weekly shop.
As I see it....and it's pure conjecture and my opinion! I think Aldi dropped a .......because maybe...just maybe they dint even consider on interview for the job the Muslim person went for...to even ask if they would serve all goods they stock. However if that was the case and they employed said person, that person later has come up for whatever reason, that they will not serve alcohol.

IMO that then put Aldi in a position they felt trapped in hence they made the decision that has caused outcry. I feel that if they were to have sacked the person this may have caused outrage amongst fellow Muslims. Maybe even for demonstrations to be held outside some of their stores...only conjecture on my part. Some may even say that in the wider scenario....extremists may have done the unthinkable and if this is how aldi thought about the complications of it...I don't think they had much of a choice. Far rather them to have sorted at interview than after an event like this.....
The "Red wine sauce" was a dead giveaway, Corbs.

"NoM how would you feel about an eighteen-year old being refused that meal because they were under twenty-five?"

Err, come again? If that is meant to strengthen your argument, it fails miserably.
Too right Nom ... I would go to church if I wanted to be exposed to the ideas of bonkers religious nuts.
DOH!
Dunnitall makes a good point - is ALDI's interview process robust enough to know they are getting staff that will work in all aspects of their role? Will they revise their policy if not.

Now we are into 'what if' territory it might be time to send this to Spielberg - could be a blockbuster.

Dunnitall makes a good point

One that has already been made.
Can I assume this Muslim is happy to handle pork?
Well surely just about every point has been made so far hasn't it - have we had moon landings or the weather mentioned yet?
You can if you wish.
Well there is no sign to say you won't be served if you have pork in your basket.
There isn't.
Annoying as it is for some, maybe stores should have an alcohol only check out. Then put staff who have no conscience /religious issues on there.
And to think I was earlier accused of being facetious.
