The media had been reporting that only Monarch's package holiday arm was likely to be affected (at least in the short term) by the withdrawal of their ATOL certification, with their scheduled services continuing normally. However the CAA statement makes it clear that the whole lot has gone under:

I've been trying to work out which airline might be next to go.

The big boys, like Ryanair and easyJet, look safe enough. Jet2's finances are reasonably strong. Thomson, with the backing of the TUI group, is probably safe but, despite its proud heritage, Thomas Cook continues to struggle and might be at risk. An airline possibly to avoid though could be FlyBe, as they've struggled to make any profits for years.

It's a shame, flew with them last year and it was a nice airline, locally based to me.

This is what happens if you try to run a premium service for a lw cost. The model is not sustainable which is why Easyjet and Ryan Air look in better shape.

It's not one of the budget airlines, but I've heard South African Airways are in trouble financially. Shame. I really like it. The staff are great.

According to the BBC, there are 110,000 who are now stranded abroad. The rescue of these people has just been described as the biggest event of its kind in peacetime.

I thought that this sort of thing didn't happen any more.

I know someone who arrived in Portugal yesterday for 10 days and has been advised to continue with their holiday and they will be advised 48 Hours before their intended return or their new flight details. Sounds organised to me

While it's a pain in the bum not to be able to get your planned flight and get back to work, school, whatever, it's not a major disaster is it?

I used Monarch a lot during my days in Spain. When I got on the internet to compare prices I noted after a while that Monarch would clock your IP address so if you went back to book it a short while later, the price for the same flight would jump up by £10. I quickly learnt to check Monarch last.

On another occasion I had to cancel a flight and was told I wasn't entitled to a refund. I told them I was entitled to claim my £40 tax back and they said there would be a £39.95 admin charge for doing so. Crooks!
