In this case , which is easily the worst I have heard of, the police were ordered to close the investigation and destroy evidence by clear misuse of the official secrets act. Those are NOT the actions of a democratic state, they are those of a dictatorship , somewhere like the old USSR or modern day North Korea.
kvalidir, as this enquiry will not prove one way or another whether Cyril Smith was guilty or not I really dont get the argument of people who were allegedly abused will be happier. IT will simply be trial by Media which I abhor.
//There is plenty of money available for both to happen. //
Youngmafbog , The police actually had strong & provable evidence that Smith was guilty but they were ordered to drop the investigation and destroy the evidence. If they had been allowed to continue Smith would have been convicted and jailed . Do you want to live in a world where that can happen?
This is NOT mainly about Smith being guilty or not, that is a side issue.
The main point is to ensure that such official interference can never hamper or prevent an investigation in the future.
Regardless of whether you believe that justice is served by investigating and prosecuting old men for historical sexual abuse of children, surely you must want investigations made into the conditions which existed which enabled this abuse to proceed unhindered?
Who were the shadowy figures who decided that it was preferable to allow these men unfettered access to the children...... who threw many bags of spanners into the works of investigations......and why?
Finding these answers may help ensure that the wholesale abuse of vulnerable children in 'Care' can never happen again.

If I thought for one minute that an inquiry would name names of those who let this happen, then I would support it. But no one will be named, it is a fatuous exercise.
Don't waste money on an enquiry, dig out the back numbers of Private Eye, they were on to Smith many years before it became fashionable, he was probably the first name mentioned openly.
Talbot....If you read the book that I mentioned earlier, there is firm evidence that the Police investigation into Smith was abandoned, under instructions from MI5, and the two Officers in charge of the case were threatened with the Official Secrets Act, and told to hand over all these case papers. :::::
Nothing useful will come out of it, if you think the authorities dont know the details of what went on you are very mistaken and I suspect it wont happen again. Not that particular exercise anyway.
YMB...the authorities most certainly DID know what went on, but either did nothing about it, or stifled the investigations.
I have said this already this morning. When the Smith case is included under the auspices of the Enquiry, it will be to find out why he wasn't investigated properly, not whether he was guilty or not, of which there no longer any doubt.
I do suspect you are right but I dislike trial by media, particularly against the dead. Believe me, if he, or any of the others, were still alive I would be pressing for a trial.
However without a trial we cannot be sure. For instance how do we actually know the evidence was 100% kosher and, I know given the size of Cyril, it wasn't a case of mistaken identity?
I have no interest in reading a book about a paedophile.
Jack Tasker says he was told to lay off Smith by people he thought were Special Branch. I haven't seen anything that prooves who did call off the investigation.
