It is an harmless form of protest.
Patriotism cannot be compulsary with strict penalises for failure to comply. Patriotism must be something you feel, and want to do/show.

I won't stand for the British national anthem (which calls upon a god I don't believe in to 'save' a so-called queen whom I refuse to acknowledge).

So what are you proposing should be done about it?

Ignore them.........the Black athletes did a similar thing in the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico City, but it all faded out.
This also will be a non starter within 2-3 years.

I don't stand for the British national anthem for the same reasons as Buenchico (plus the "rebellious Scots to crush" verse, but I do stand for the Scottish national anthem.

Well we all know that there are not many patriotic British these days, perhaps that is because of the multi racial country that we now live in.
But surely if one is representing one's country, either in sport (as in this case) or belonging to the armed services etc then surely it is expected as a mark of pride and allegiance to stand in public for one's National Anthem.

I was at our local British Legion a few year ago when folk were standing for the National Anthem. I remained seated and that was an issue for them so I was asked to leave the hall while it was playing and was allowed back in only when it finished.

Pride and allegiance have to be earned. There is a lot wrong with American Society, when that is fixed, then ALL its citizens will have something to take pride in.
