The NFL''s Game Operations Manual says about the anthem,

"The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking."

The anthem MUST be played but players SHOULD stand, not MUST stand.

As Jim said, kneeling was actually arrived at as a respectful compromise between a person who wanted to sit during the anthem as a peaceful protest against police brutality, and someone who felt the anthem should be acknowledged. It was a product of dialogue between the two sides which has since become widespread.

Honestly if this isn't to be allowed then it is difficult to understand what kind of protest *is* supposed to be acceptable in a free society. Patriotism should not be an obligation, and I think the USA has a weird and culty attitude towards it. I would not like to see it replicated in Britain.

Presumably they did not see standing for the national anthem as indicating their support for their fellow players' abuse of women, whereas they did see it as indicating their support for the police's abuse of black people.

SPICERACK the reasons for my being at the Legion are neither here nor there. It was the first and only time I've been there, I don't stand for the National Anthem anywhere else and it would have been hypocritical of me to do so at the Legion.
