Was it necessary to murder this magnificent animal because some brainless pillock entered his enclosure? Natural selection at work if you asked me. Why do we take out human mistakes on innocent animals? Fuming.

jno I saw this story earlier this week. I've actually seen the video of the chap walking into the lion enclosure. Thing is - just because you've raised a lion from a cub, doesn't mean that the lion has the cognitive reasoning to think, "Oh, that grey-haired bloke over there, he's a mate of mine...not dinner." No, the whole thing about wild animals is that they're...

what are you on about AOG? the lion was shot in Africa.
-- answer removed --
Ridiculous that the animal should be killed. He was stupid because he should have known that any animal always has the potential to be dangerous, irrespective of any history they may have had.

I have a domestic moggy. It thinks I'm it's mother, but that doesn't stop it randomly biting my hand for no apparent reason every now and then. That's what animals do. If it was a lion I'd be dead by now - except I wouldn't, because I wouldn't be treating it like a pet and hanging around it as if it was my friend. I'd respect it enough to leave it the hell alone.
Oh I apologise I thought it was some safari type park in the UK, but my argument still stands regarding those roaming free in Africa, has man no right to encroach on their territory and if he does and he is attacked shouldn't he kill his attacker?
I think that it is because the Lion is a nice good looking noble creature, just like a big pussy cat, I wonder if people's sentiments would be the same if the attacking creature had been an alligator?
This is Kadiki - a cat with a blankie

She 'looks' cute and harmless

AOG: "has man no right to encroach on their territory and if he does and he is attacked shouldn't he kill his attacker? " - of course man has a right but he chooses to take on the risk, same as swimming with sharks do not be surprised if one eats you. In all fairness I accept they have to take precautions in the wild and if necessary they'll shoot an animal, I'd prefer it if they had tranquilizers but I understand. This case though is terrible because it's so unnecessary, the lion died for the vanity of this idiot. He thought he was a special case so went into the enclosure thinking he had some sort of immunity because he was regarded as being "no fool around lions" - then proceeded to demonstrate that he was a fool around lions.

Yes understood TTT and well put, but there is always to be idiots, but still the fact remains that if a human life is threatened by an animal, the animal is always going to be the one that is taken out.

yes AOG sadly that is true but the human should not go unpunished. We need an offence of causing death of an animal buy being a brainless plonker or such like.
// I think that it is because the Lion is a nice good looking noble creature, just like a big pussy cat, I wonder if people's sentiments would be the same if the attacking creature had been an alligator?//

Not at all. If you die trying to cuddle a captive crocodile, it's your fault. The croc should not be punished for doing what comes naturally to it.
people seem to think lions will attack anyone. They won't. They won't go near a Maasai, for instance, they're scared. Lions are well able to distinguish who to bite and who not. I'm surprised by this case; I wonder if the guy had recently had a shower or something.

the lion must have been peckish jno and the bloke turned his back, QED, lunch! He was lucky to survive they normally kill the prey instantly with a neck bite.
// people seem to think lions will attack anyone. They won't //

These were probably the last words spoken by the bloke in the story, just before he was attacked by a lion.
lions have a sense of smell, that's why I wondered about whether the man had washed his away recently. The lion dragged him away but didn't seem to be trying to eat him.

Oh so you would just stand around and let the croc get on with it's meal, when you had the chance to take out the croc and save a human being from such a fate?
they'll attack many people, ludwig, but it's wrong to say that everyone is in danger; lions can distinguish one from another in the case of ones they know.

I don't think this one would have been hungry; he was fed regularly, a little luxury available to captive lions.

Oh dear!!! you are not saying that Maasais stink are you?
// Oh so you would just stand around and let the croc get on with it's meal, when you had the chance to take out the croc and save a human being from such a fate? //

What a silly thing to say AOG.

What I am saying is that if someone climbed into a croc enclosure - let's assume no-one else including me is around - and they just find his mangled remains later, they should not say 'Let's kill that croc, he's dangerous'. What they should say is 'Look - someone has climbed into the croc enclosure and been mangled, what an idiot'.
no, I hoped I'd explained that, aog. They're scared of Maasai, not repelled by them. Maasai have a considerable reputation as lion-hunters, so even the lions know about them. (They're thought to be the descendants of a lost Roman legion.)
