We have a responsibility because we have acted in a certain way for a period of time, and that has allowed the situation to develop to where it is now. It's definitely a problem, but turning boats away and letting people drown - including people like babies who are unquestionably innocent - is simply inhuman.

It's also addressing symptoms rather than causes. It's operating at completely the wrong end of the problem. As long as we continue to treat the symptoms, the causes will remain and the problem will perpetuate.

If somebody previously ignorant of the "refugee crisis" were learning about for the first time just from this thread and the links supplied in it, they'd probably summarise the issue something like this:

Thousands of people are fleeing their own countries because of intolerable conditions and trying to enter Europe.

Europeans (judging from the AB subset of it) are broadly of two types: those who think the refugees should be welcomed and cared for, and those who think the refugees should be turned away.

I (a type 2, by the way) have a question for all honest and reasonable type 1s. It's a very simple one:

Is there a limit to the number of refugees Europe should accept?

I'll take just Italy as a case. You think Italy is wrong to turn away 700 people. OK, would Italy be wrong to turn away another 6,000, or 60,000? Remember Italy has already accepted over half a million refugees. Note too that most of the refugees come from sub-Saharan Africa. Countries like Nigeria and Sudan have tens of millions of people living in poverty who would probably like a better life in a prosperous European country. Please can anyone of you give me a number - any number - at which you would be prepared to say "Enough!". Or is there no such number?
