I think a cracking start VE would be for us to actually implement the laws that we have, so where you are seeing girls with FGM, it's imperative that we prosecute, absolutely imperative, until there are consequences people won't change. At the same time educate the generation coming up through school. Integration is vital, I would like to see everyone, men...

kvalidir - // I think what Andy was trying to say that anyone brought up in a culture finds nothing strange or remarkable about that culture so when they encounter another culture with polar positions on things it is both a surprise and shock to them. education is clearly the way ion all cases as beating people with a stick about how primitive their culture is will only meet with resistance. We need to eradicate child marriages world wide, so de-normalisng that in cultures where it is normal is very much the way forward, and that doesn't take 5 minutes. //
Thank you - that was exactly my point.
And I must also agree strongly that the way to adjust attitudes to issues that we find unacceptable is not to tell the people practising them that they are 'savages' - that is unlikely to bring about a change in thinking anytime soon.

YMB - // AH, so what will change their mind, inviting them for a nice cup of tea? //
Yourself, and others who feel as you do tend to be keen to hit the sarcasm button, rather than looking at the issue.
Not telling someone they are a savage for believing and acting as they do, is not the same as condoning their attitudes and suggesting 'chatting over a cup of tea' as the tiresome and humourless cliche so often has it.
//Whilst I do sort of see where you are going I really dont think it hurts for people to know how strongly we feel about them. //
If you are going to call someone a savage, then I think people knowing that you think that hurts quite a lot.
There is a motto I have lived by for my entire adult life, and it applies when you are trying to get your issues sorted with BT, or trying to convince an ardent Muslim that his approach to child safety is out of line -
Never upset someone whose co-operation you need considerably - especially, if they don't need yours at all.

VE thank you :) My Avatar was done for Pride and was really me (well the right hand half was anyway, the other was my beloved :) so I wasn't absolutely comfortable with it being up all the timeeven though it was very stylised, had a think about and replaced it with TrashPanda ( nickname for my man- it's a Racoon when he had a black eye- long story) but nothing sinister about Trashpandas they're adorable.
YMB- my mistake I was thinking that Spain had raised it from 12 to 13 which they did, I missed it had been increased again in 2015. so 14 seems to be very common but not as you point out 13.
Spath- I really don't think a 16 year old having sex with a 14 year old is a paedophile :/

This article from last year - a new Bangladeshi law allowing marriage under the legal age (18 for women) in "special cases":
https:/ /www.in depende nt.co.u k/news/ world/a sia/ban gladesh -child- marriag e-law-m inimum- age-zer o-reduc e-baby- marital -unicef -un-a76 19051.h tml
Note this sentence “The need to protect the 'honour' of girls who have become pregnant was widely cited by the Bangladesh government as the reason for this provision".
Here's a question for Kvalidir and others who believe that "education" is the means by which to change moral attitudes.
(That does imply that our standard is morally superior, by the way, doesn't it?) Anyway, the question: how exactly do you go about persuading a forty year old man that he shouldn't be having sex with a twelve year old?
Let's move east (from where I am) and consider the demographic of Tower Hamlets. Is this something like 30% Bangladeshi? Are most of these Bangladeshis poorly educated and religiously conservative? Are most of the women dressed "modestly" like burgas and scarves? In ten years time Tower Hamlets will be more than half Muslim - mainly Bangladeshi, but with a large Somali minority (who also bring FGM to the cultural table). This looks like a pretty self-contained community to me. What makes you think that they're going now, or ever to change their views about sex and marriage. What makes you think it's likely that they're going to accept your moral standards when their imams are telling them something different?
Ardent and consistent multi-culturalists will add the question "And why should they?".
