webbo, You need to remember, using the phrase 'cultural appropriation' is the same as using the term 'gender neutral' - it's shorthand for the rather more lengthy, but far more accurate phrase - "I am an over-thinking egotistical idiot with more time than sense and I believe that my opinions are more important than anyone else's, even though it is a...

Aaahhh, getting the whole 'circle jerk' thing now.

"..everyone already knows Jamie Oliver's dishes are not authentic."

I disagree, his tongue is the stuff of legend.
People actually voted for this woman.
People also actually voted for Diane Abbott!
What a motley crew Labour really is.
Whilst I'm not necessarily expecting people to agree with this woman, it would be nice if Andy-Hughes and company could at least bother to think more critically about that which they are dismissing so out-of-hand.

I've explained Cultural Appropriation, in its real sense, before -- it's disappointing to see that A-H hasn't taken any note of it; nor of kvalidir's answer, which also properly captures the point Ms Butler is trying to make.
People like her rant about equality but how do they ever expect to feel that they’ve achieved that when the moment someone from outside their ethnic group touches an aspect of that ethnicity, they grasp frantically at their roots and scream ‘foul’?

You want equality, Dawn? So get over yourself and behave as someone who is equal instead of like a whinging attention seeker. I'm never going to mind you cooking roast beef and Yorkshire pudding …. honestly I’m not … even if you get it wrong.

People like her exacerbate racism - and anyone who supports her abject nonsense does likewise.
" I'm never going to mind you cooking roast beef and Yorkshire pudding …"

It's not really the same, though.

As and when you actually go to the trouble of understanding where she's coming from, even if you don't agree with it (and, for the record, I don't either), let me know -- but at the moment you're missing the point.
Jim, no, she's missing the point. She's exacerbating racism.
You ain't half full of yourself at times, jim.

I agree with naomi, she is only exasperating racism.
If you don't see why your comparison is not even remotely relevant, then you have no ability to judge whether or not she's missing the point.
^Haaaa! Something like that. :o)
*That to Talbot.

jim, ahh right. Because I disagree with you - and her - I don't have the ability to judge - but because you agree with her, you do. Right.....
Well, possibly, Talbot. Still, as best I can make out there's exactly one other person in this thread who knows what "cultural appropriation" means. I would rather be in my position.

I realise as I type this that I'm doing nothing to dispel the accusation, but... ah, well.
No, that's not what I'm saying at all.

It's not the fact of the disagreement, it's the nature of it. You're not making a valid comparison by referring to "roast beef and Yorkshire pudding" -- and if you can't see that, then yes, you don't have the ability to judge. That doesn't equate to saying that you are wrong because you disagree with me. At all.

Jim, //there's exactly one other person in this thread who knows what "cultural appropriation" means.//

We all know what it means but that doesn't make it sensible. Fine, people want to preserve their traditions and their culture - I understand that - but how ridiculous it is to create racial disharmony where none previously existed. If anything she should be proud that someone from a different ethnic background admires aspects of her culture so much that he wants to emulate it.

Anyway, all food is appropriated from somewhere. I doubt chickens or rice are indigenous to Jamaica, are they?
And they send all their jerks to be Labour MPs in the UK.
//as best I can make out there's exactly one other person in this thread who knows what "cultural appropriation" means//

Pretty exclusive club then, Jim. Can I join? OK, silly question.
