I taught for 16 years (last 7 as a senior teacher) in a large upper school. You should try and visit as many secondary schools as you can and get a feel for them. The least threatened I have felt is at the high school two of my children currently attend. It is a small, rural school and just has a 'safe' feeling about it. With regards to my eldest boy's plans it's not what I would have wished for him (for the danger point of view) but I think it will give him amazing experiences and it's something that will suit his temperament - I've only recently fully appreciated his determination.
I'm not meaning to sound disheartened, exactly. It's a job I'm wary of committing myself to before I am sure I know that I'll be good at it in a high-school environment. In that sense, I'm grateful for all the praise but the real test will be in front of actual children.
Speaking of, volunteering at my old High School for a few weeks in September, so that will help rather a lot in working things out.
