I don't have to read books to know of the crime committed in some of those cities, take London for example, 108 murders so far this year, I am not aware that Dickens's London ever had that many.

That’s still an ‘end point’. Once the mugger leaves his house and mounts a (stolen) bike - we’ve already reach the point where we have all the remedial work to do (apprehension, trail, jail etc).

Of course it could be argued that if the judiciary stepped up then it would be a deterrent for some and removal from society for others. At that point there would be time and resources to put in preventatI've measures.

The reason I ask Anotheroldgit is because if anyone comments on the 40/50/60 you rip them to pieces because they haven’t lived therefore cannot comment on those times.

ANOTHEOLDGIT, you are concentrating on London but you have no idea if the homicide rate is better or worse than other places in the UK.

From WEBBO's link, "Figures from the Office for National Statistics for homicides (also including manslaughter and infanticide), filtered by particular police constabularies, show the Met had the ninth highest homicide rate (12.2 per million population) in 2016/17, or the eighth highest if the 96 Hillsborough deaths added to South Yorkshire’s tally were excluded. Excluding South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester had the highest homicide rate (19.1) and Lincolnshire the second highest (17.5)."

There are at least eight other areas with higher homicide rates than London and Greater Manchester is the worst.
