Yes I know Trump said it, but please don't turn this into yet another anti-Trump thread, please address it on the fact that if one is a man (no matter of what nationality) one can be deemed guilty until proven innocent.

I think although she explained the timing of her accusation it did raise suspicion of political motivation or revenge rather than an attempt to get justice. Unfortunately the old boys network was always going to close ranks. I think now the focus should be getting through to young people that respect for one another is the way forward.
Perhaps some young American men will be along shortly to tell us how scared or otherwise they are.
Until then ...

//I often wonder how 'courting couples' go on today when they are locked together in a passionate embrace and the male's hands start to wander, do they first have to obtain written permission from the female now, or is the time honoured slap across the face still in valid?//

Well , if they are locked together in a passionate embrace ; i would have thought that they have already gone past the stage of any required permissions ?
having been a female in the 60's/70's (I still am) it wasn't always as easy as saying stop or I will take further action. First you had to be believed and taken seriously by whoever you were supposed to report to, and secondly there had to be something that they could do because policies and disciplinary practice was mush less in evidence than today. There was also the widespread belief that wearing the fashions of the day meant that you were "asking for it"
I have no commnet to make about the behaviour of young women (and men) today except to say that whatever the behaviour, if you are not sure that a person has consented to what you want to do then THEY HAVEN'T. There is a responsibilty on both people here. Its no defence to say "we were both out of it" If you can't control yourself when you are out of it, then don't get out of it whever you are. Someone else's behaviour never excuses your own.

I've not read all the replies but in my opinion no-one should be considered guilty until proven innocent nor should anyone be identified to the Public until proven guilty, no way.

Excellent answer, woofgang.

There are far too many hypothetical "what if....?" scenarios being chucked around. There are more than enough 'factual' instances of inappropriate comments/groping, assaults, rapes to be going on with.
There is also too much victim-blaming and insinuations of 'blowing things out of all proportion' going on, too.
Was that a rushed answer, Ben?

Gut feeling Bill ;o)
There seems to be an acceptance of not questioning whether someone is 'blowing things out of all proportion' going on, too.

Whether you believe Kavanaugh is fit for the position or not, the credibility of his accusers isn't that convincing is it?
For some, it's almost as if it hurts to think he may be innocent of the accusations.

// I have no doubt that, were I on the jury in Kavanaugh's trial,//

He's not on trial. Even Alison Saunders wouldn't put a man on trial given the standard of the non-evidence against him.
Whatever happens Mr President needs to resit the part of the course dealing with ordinary, decent adult behaviour.

The man's a complete oaf and a contemptuous bully. No manners or breeding whatsoever.
Were I on the jury in Kavanaugh's trial should it happen, then. Hardly undermines the point I was making, which is that the legal standards are (rightly) high enough that on the evidence available so far Kavanaugh wouldn't be convicted.

Whatever. Trump's behaviour is sickening and pathetic, and a disgrace to his office.

Douglas, please respect the OPers wishes ;o)

/// please don't turn this into yet another anti-Trump thread ///
It's not possible to separate President Donald "grab 'em by the pussy" Trump from the story anyway. That he is in such a powerful office, free to spout off like he has done about this woman, is highly relevant to the general picture.

I haven't been following the Kavanaugh story because I had a bad reaction to the flu jab this year. It was nowhere near as bad or long drawn out as flu so I still think I made the right decision but that's by the by.

I don't think young men, or women, for that matteranywhere need to be scared....all they have to do is to be responsible for their own behaviour.....
For those older people who thought that they could get away with what they did in the past.....well here comes nemesis.
I found Christine Blasey Ford compelling, however, I also found Kavanaugh compelling......I am glad it won't be up to me to choose.

I always speak in 'general' terms on threads like these unless there is a specific reference.
But there *is* no doubt that there has been a sea-change in public-opinion and that women believe that they stand more chance of being believed whereas before their claims would have been dimissed out-of-hand and probably dealt with with considerable prejudice.
Talbot-// I've been puzzled why we haven't had a Kavanaugh thread.//

Same as that. I presumed the liberal/left were too embarrassed to mention it. And to make fun of Ford's wheedling little girl act would be akin to kicking a puppy.
You presumed wrongly, on my part at least. I just couldn't see the point.

Maybe let's not call Ford a wheedling little girl either, huh?
Jim. You keep saying Kavanaugh lied about drinking beer. At the hearing he said he loved beer when he was a student and he still loves it now.
Have you and/or your left wing friends discovered that he doesn't like beer?
