// Speaking to the BBC this week, her lawyer said she would need to move to a Western country for her own safety. Several countries have offered her asylum.//

…but ….

Pakistan's authorities have struck a deal with a hard-line Islamist party to end the protest over her acquittal ….

As part of the deal, Asia Bibi will be barred from leaving the country, though it is unclear for how long.

The protesters will also be able to file an appeal to the Supreme Court over its decision to release her.

She was convicted in 2010 of insulting the Prophet Muhammad, but was acquitted earlier this week.

Pakistani Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry defended the agreement against allegations the government was capitulating to extremists://

Capitulation to extremists? Clearly. What now for Asia Bibi?

This really is the most appalling case.
what is wrong with these people, and Imran Khan in particular, he seems to have played to the mob mentality, its an horrendous case and one that should be carefully considered by the UK to give her asylum.
// My objection to Peter is his trivilalisation of the effects on the UK //
there are none - it is a delayed acquittal in Pakistan and only that
and we can tell there is no effect because IF she had been convicted and hanged
it would STILL have no effect on the UK

ergo - - the two events are unconnected ....

and my new best friend agrees ( Mamya - ) hi Mamya sweet one!

I agree, emmie, but she’s now barred from leaving the country. I can’t help thinking that one way or another she is doomed.
// and Imran Khan in particular, he seems to have played to the mob mentality, //

he is in an Aung Yoo Soo Chi situation - he looks as tho he has power but hasnt ... so he does as his puppet masters tell him

perhaps even he says 'it wasnt meant to be like this when I was 'elected''
She is a member of the Catholic church, are they involving themselves?
Here's the background;

'In June 2009, Noreen [aka Asia Bibi] was harvesting falsa berries with a group of other women farmhands in a field in Sheikhupura. She was asked at one point to fetch water from a nearby well, she complied but stopped to take a drink with an old metal cup she had found lying next to the well. A neighbour of Noreen, Musarat, who had been involved in a running feud with Noreen's family about some property damage, saw her and angrily told her that it was forbidden for a Christian to drink water from the same utensil from which Muslims drink, and that some of the other workers considered her to be unclean because she was a Christian, referring to the caste system in Pakistan. Noreen recounted that Musarat said to her: "That’s right, you’re just a filthy Christian! You’ve contaminated our water and now you dare speak for the Prophet! Stupid ***, your Jesus didn’t even have a proper father, he was a ***, don’t you know that?" Noreen recounts that when they made derogatory statements about Christianity and demanded that she convert to Islam, she responded, "I believe in my religion and in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of mankind. What did your Prophet Mohammed ever do to save mankind? And why should it be me that converts instead of you?" An argument ensued.

According to Noreen, five days after this incident, Musarat brought a mob of people to the field in which she was picking fruit, accusing her of insulting the Prophet Muhammad. There, she was dragged away and punched in the nose. The local imam stated that she could redeem herself by converting to Islam or death, to which Noreen responded that she did not want to renounce her Christian faith, but that they should show mercy to her as she was innocent of the charge Musarat levied against her. What they accused her of saying, which would be stated in the later court verdict, differs from her version. A mob came to her house, beating her and members of her family before she was taken away by the police. The police initiated an investigation about her remarks, resulting in her arrest under Section 295 C of the Pakistan Penal Code.'
i too feel that this isn't going to end well.

Not many are interested in the latest or even at all...there is after all a Birmingham taxi driver to defend from the wolf pack.

Khan got into power on the back of the Islamist savages and he supports blasphemy laws, so not quite sure why we thought this would have a happy ending.

i thought that Imran Khan was more progressive than that, obviously not.
Spain and France have both offered asylum, but how to get her there? perhaps the burka might, for once, serve a useful purpose

The Catholic Church's only statement,- as far as I can see- is that it is thanks to their prayers that she has been released.

If a Muslim had been slung into a UK jail for blaspheming against Jesus, can you imagine the outcry from the Islamic world's mullahs and politicians?

Imran Khan should be told that unless and until she is escorted to safety the £374m it receives from the UK will be suspended.
that money should be stopped immediately and they should be told in no uncertain terms that it will only be reinstated after she is released into UK care. She may be only one individual but feel that this happens all the time in that hell hole

We have just seen, haven't we?
What hope is there when young children are swayed like that.

Talbot, as I said at 06:43 Sat, “I think some people were relying upon Imran Khan to see justice done. I can’t say I’m surprised that it hasn’t been”.

His celebrity status belies reality.

◾"I am requesting the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to help us exit from Pakistan." — Ashiq Masih, Asia Bibi's husband.

◾"Placing Asia Bibi on the ECL [no-fly list] is like signing her death warrant." — Wilson Chowdhry, Chairman of the British Pakistani Christian Association.

◾Blasphemy laws in Pakistan "have been used to target religious minorities, pursue personal vendettas, and carry out vigilante violence. On the basis of little or no evidence, the accused will struggle to establish their innocence while angry and violent mobs seek to intimidate the police, witnesses, prosecutors, lawyers and judges." — Amnesty International
