I am, however, clear on one thing and that is that religion of a sort is involved and that is in regard to the sanctity of a fake flower as a war totem which is a uniquely de rigueur British preoccupation (vaguely familiar to the ex-empire) once a year every year when there is, sure as clockwork, public posturing and sanctimonious mutterings of sacrifice, etc. spew forth. Is this really going to go on forever ? How long is the "glorious" slaughter of humans going to be celebrated ? Will it never become a time for mourning over the folly of war and military pompousness - at least in private ? Is it too much to hope that the 100th time will be the last ?
