the subject of drones has been aired before in this forum, with the majority consensus being that the authorities should stop being drama queens, grow some and let drone flyers get on with managing their own affairs.

so would it be fair to say that AB consider Gatwick Airport to have "over reacted" last night?

The should be banned altogether.
They are not going to go away, so I think owners should have to have a licence and pass a test just like owning a car or motorbike. They should then have registered serial numbers, so the owner can be traced and an age limit on ownership - just like a motor bike.
Licence fees would also be a nice little earner for the government, and also reduce the amount of them.
I love my drone. I only fly it in nearby fields or on the beach. My phone clips on the controller and lets me se what the camera is recording. Fascinating things if used safely.
Gatwick Airport has not over-reacted. Its an ongoing thing apparently the Police are trying to find the operator who keeps disappearing the drone then it reappears somewhere else.
I find this disturbing considering the billions of pounds we spend on defence, an idiot with a drone can close down an airport. I could have probably popped it with a shotgun, though not sure how high these things go, they should be banned.
In the summer our horses were going mental in the field, turns out some richard cranium was flying a drone over the field but ' I'm in the countryside what harm can that do' ? Ban them.
Poortony - they serve a purpose in the right hands. I agree with Kandro, they should be licensed.

I work for a security firm and we use a drone to patrol building sites. The amount of theft that goes on on building sites is shocking.
Sparkly -do you realise how frightening these drones are to cows sheep and horses in fields? A horse was killed this summer -it got spooked by a drone and galloped into a barbed wire fence.
Must have bloody good stockpile of battery's and no one has yet seen it land or take off
The fields I use have no buildings or livestock. Similarly on the beach, there are plenty around me seldom frequented by people.
AL unless you buzz them deliberately livestock really don't give a chuff about them. We fly ours a lot and are respectful of our own stock and other people's. If people are spooking stock, they are doing so deliberately.

What have you got Sparkly we've got a DJI Phantom 4 Pro2, and we love it? x
Maybe we should ban commercial airplanes. I believe they also fly over fields.
Not sure Kval;. My daughter bought it to take aerial pics of a house in spain she was selling and had no further use for it. It was about £100 so half decent.
That's cheap, SK.
It served its purpose, the pics and vids are exceptionally clear.

I have two others, one from Lidl £19.99 and one from Menkind £29.99.

All work extremely well.
Ours cost a few thousand.
As the saying goes " a fool and his money are soon parted" lol.
for a few thousand you'd have a bloomin good un!
the latest one we have was about £1500 but that's because it's used for a specific purpose as well. For entertainment you can get some really decent ones really reasonably priced.
We've got an original DJI Phantom 4 for sale if you know anyone who wants one Sparkly x
I didn't pay for it so I couldn't care less. It's work though, not a hobby.
Thanks for the tip Kval, all OAP.s round me. I wouldn't mind one with GPS or whatever for more precise control. Wife won't let me though.
