Pixie, some are proud to be English, others don't give a flying hoot, and don't see themselves as "British" but simply a human on the earth.

Then we get into why and who even st George is.. And the more you look into it the more deluded the whole thing is and the less it makes sense.

It's that simple to me. I've expressed that and have as much right to as others who express their proudness of the day and person.
My self esteem is fine Pixie, thank you. As is my respect for those who deserve it.
Gnat is what I had in mind.
As I said... I will look for your comments on other saints' days... there is nothing to be 'proud' of. Nobody is a nationality because of anything they have personally done. But celebrating your favourite country (anyone who chooses to live in it) is acceptable, surely?
I am English, i will comment on the English patron saint. The scots, irish and welsh can do as they wish as far as i'm concerned. Has nout to do with me.
I am not fat, bald or a Sun reader either...
I'm a little over weight, thinning slightly on top and I can read. :-)
// PP, another pile of gibberish. How do you expect to ever be taken seriously.//

o god I love it when a standard Aber says something unprompted like
St George of Cappadocia not English ? where he from den? cappadocia or somewhere ? Foo!

cappadocia - you know cappadocia - it is where St Paul sent the letters to .....
i'm with spath here (not words id ever thought i'd say)
I would be interested to know what all these people who are proud of essentially an accident of birth do to celebrate, or is it literally just a smug feeling inside?
I a very pleased i live in this country and it's great my country has added a lot to the world, but they aren't MY achievements, so i can't really understand the proud bit
Yep its on google home page.
On the matter of St. George and patron saint you said: "Then we get into why and who even st George is.. And the more you look into it the more deluded the whole thing is and the less it makes sense." Well, in that case, most of the world must be deluded: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patron_saints_of_places
That's kind of what I meant, bednobs x
Bednobs, it is not a matter of personal pride, it is a general pride in the country, in this case it is England.I am sure that the Scots feel the same on St. Andrew's Day.
// in this case it is England.I am sure that the Scots feel the same on St. Andrew's Day.//

and america of course - who is the patron saint of the states? I bet you dont know... (BVM)

where are the anthropotoblists ? the ones who study societies?
who do we honour and why?
The americans go after the flag and are shocked you can buy union jack underpants ... actually the stars and stripes CANNOT be made into clothing
The English honour the monarch and have a morbid fascination with all things Royal and what Prince loo-ee is doing today. The first family ( er mr Trump and the rest of the dishonourable lot) dont exert such a hold on the Americans
we swear allegiance to a person ( er the Queen that is !) which is anathema to the average american

so no the scots may well NOT feel the same as we do
but hey danny
keep up the gibberish,
I still take you seriously !
PP,as usual you have wandered of the thread.( I think, although ploughing through your posts to make any sense of them is a pain)
Didn't know AB had so many christians.
"most of the world must be deluded"

Only just catching on? lol ;oP
Yes, I am aware. There is a small flag flying from an upstairs window and a St. George's flag badge pinned to my lapel.
