Even if the headline is true and talks with Conservatives and Labour about Brexit are breaking down... then good. Maybe talks will breakdown before and they won’t be able to foist their crap on us.

I'm afraid I can. Remaining in either "the" or "a" customs union negates the main advantage of leaving the EU. Most MPs do not want the UK to leave the EU and such a move will satisfy the requirements of many of them. It will also suit the EU enormously because one of their main fears is that the UK will make a success of leaving.

The problem now is that both parties have realised that they face a shafting in ant elections that will take place in the near future (particularly the EU elections). I read today that they are both eager to "get this over and done with". Unfortunately their idea of getting it over and done with is simply to see the UK removed from the list of EU members. They are not really concerned with the detail, preferring instead to try to bamboozle the electorate into thinking that Brexit has been delivered. They may be in for a shock.

The danger tho is that the disastrous local election results will panic the main party representatives into a hopeless compromise. But it still seems unlikely

What will be fascinating if we get to May 23 is to see if the Lib Den revival continues.
In N Ireland, which as usual is being ignored, there was a mini revolution in the elections: the Alliance party surged dramatically to become effectively one of the main parties and the DUP did rather badly overall. Tho they did elect their first openly gay councillor. This is being attributed to a big increase in the number of younger first time voters. A trend I wouldn’t be surprised seeing develop elsewhere.

"Respecting the result" is all but impossible because the simple fact is that leaving meant different things to different people in 2016 and still does even now.

I'd be wary of assuming that local election rests will translate to a GE. People feel very free to register protest votes at local elections and I do wonder how many tories who are now blowing hard against the government will waver and fall back into line when faced with the threat of Corbyn's Labour. The same is also true on the other side although I suspect to a slightly lesser extent because the left is notoriously prone to factionalism.

I see the media is claiming that May is close to caving in over the second referendum issue that the anti-democratic present Labour party is trying to get, in order to get a chance to ignore our earlier decision. I trust it's just media hype because opting to risk not finishing this exit business but leaving it an open sore for years to come, would be the stupidest May capitulation yet.

At least three different 'Leave' campaigns, all making contradictory promises to different sections of the electorate. At some point when all this calms down, you're going to need to face the fact that large numbers of people voted 'Leave' with something very different in mind to you.

Politics is and always has been the art of the possible.

What really irritates Remain supporters is not so much the fact that “Leave” but that after 3 years of pain, and many of us agreeing to abide by the result, it appears that many Brexit supporters don’t want the reality of Brexit but something else instead.
Reminds me of trips to the toy shop to buy expensive gifts against one’s better judgment only to find the little one stamping his feet and asking for the most expensive one on the top shelf.
