And why shouldn't we be told the colour of the assailant's skin? It would be shouted from the roof tops if a white person happened to attack a black person.

Because it adds fuel to the flames for the bigoted nasties who want to reduce anything and everything to the colour of someone's skin and / or their religion.

Do you not think the background of the assailant is more important than their skin colour? For example what area they were born in, what school they went to?
If we find out where someone went so drastically wrong maybe just maybe we could put action into place to try and stop this kind of barbarianism.

As I said, it depends on the root cause of your interest - wondering how we can move forward with some solutions, or waiting to condemn this individual, not for what he has done, but for having the temerity to be none-white and non-Christian.

It's times like these when we ought to reflect on how courageous and difficult the job of a police officer can be.
Every response incident has the potential for the unknown and officers can be faced with significant danger.
Despite their training, officers sometimes have to take split second decisions.

Sadly, it has always happened and will happen again.
Some perpetrators deliberately aim to wound others are mentally unstable.
Where convictions are obtained, we need sentences that adequately reflect the crime.

Man in his 50s ,suspected of driving van without insurance. Police stop the van to investigate . Man gets out of van ,speaks to police and then returns to van and gets a machete out of it. Attacks and wounds police officer. Then another policeman uses his taser on the offender who is then arrested. Wounded police officer will recover.

This incidentally applies to all, be them black, white, Christian or of any other religions and going as far as life choices such as the travelling communities etc.
There have been far two many cover ups carried out, one particular one, was of course the reluctant for the authorities to tackle the wide ranging child grooming gangs, simply because they were frightened of being accused of racism.
And of course, by certain members of AB who wish to call those who dare approach such subjects as bigots.

AgChristie, my main point is... The colour of the assailant is moot. It teaches us absolutely nothing. It doesn't let us know the persons background, it doesn't let us know where they are form, it doesn't let us know their nationality, their mental health history, it doesn't let us know why they committed an attack... it's utterly moot.
All it does is give people a characteristic in mind that they then associate to the kind of crime committed. That is wrong and it is actually societys conditioning, which we must stop.

No one can assure that this type of thing doesn't happen again, but discovering whether or not the assailant, was black, white, Muslim, Christian, far-right, far-left etc etc. will go a long way in focusing the root cause of the problem.

What evidence do you have, that proves discovering personal details about a assailants character, such as colour or religion, which went a long way to preventing a similar attack from happening again?
