It is always an easy option to blame the parents with little or no evidence.

I can only remember being smacked once and that was for setting the outside toilet door on fire with those matches called London lights, must of been on a Wednesday as my Dad was a radio engineer for a large store in Newcastle and they had Wednesday afternoon early closing, it was he who smacked the back of my legs and made me stay in that day ,didn’t do me any harm

She sounds like my oldest child used to be at that age. I never smacked him, but he outgrew it anyway.
The swearing and middle finger gestures can only be learnt from other people, so they maybe need to think about the company she is with.

Children are like sponges... they learn from example. It is interesting that those who most agree with violence towards children, also seem to be those who complain about violence in youngsters. Baffling...!

My mum used to smack, my Dad didn't. My Dad was the one I respected more. I don't agree with smacking at all, it achieves nothing. A quick slap on the hand if a child is doing something dangerous is fine. Smacking is premeditated or done in temper.

Those people argue that the result of abolition of smacking should reduce the incidence of violence in later life, but like others, i have seen no signs of this.....quite the opposite.

That doesn't seem to be true though, sqad. Look on AB alone and see the criticism of young people and how "violent" they are... and yet, they can only learn that from a previous generation, who use violence, instead of discipline (in fact, many older people see them as the same thing).
If parenting was so great in those days.... why are there apparently so many problems with the generation after them? X

Some day soon there will be a book called "How to raise your child" and in it will be a government list of everything you can't feed them, everything you can't do with them.. Oh not actually it's be a bit easier to just write down what you Can feed and Do with them!

No, I certainly don't agree with smacking ANY child. Has anyone mentioned this little girl might have ADHD? Has she been tested for Tourettes? I didn't see the programme but I do wonder why anyone with a child that has behavioural problems would want to show this on national television.?

Spath, sometimes parents especially new parents need advice if they are having problems with a child so what do you do, smack the child or get help from first of all your GP or just go on TV?

It depends what the problem is?

If i went to touch something hot as a child my nan would usually slap my hand or wrist so that i would learn. It wasn't abuse in any means at all.

I've had my bottom spanked numerous times. I never saw it as abuse then or in my later life.

I think a gentle push in the right direction is fine. I think people get some sick thoughts in their head when they think of people "smacking" their children.

Where is the line between a spank and a smack? Or are neither OK?
