Overall he laid down sensible measures.

Agree and not like some military dictator....only a hint of the iron fist in a velvet glove at this time, so well-pitched. Also I like the encouragement of communities and families to come together and help. No sign of my new neighbours though - not sure if the other cottages on my 'country park estate' are even occupied.

Interesting that when asked about enforcement of these "social distancing" and self-isolation measures he said that the government already had such powers, dating from 1984 (I think).

Instead of telling people to avoid pubs, restaurants and theatres he should close them down so they can at least claim for lost revenue on insurance.

There is not a hope in hell of insurers paying for lost revenue if pubs have been closed by order. There will almost certainly be a "force majeure" clause which will absolved them from liability in such extraordinary circumstances.

I don't share his optimism regarding the UK being a "mature and adult" society. Many people (and businesses) will find it extremely difficult to comply with the PM's advice and will continue to lead their normal lives unless forcibly prevented from doing so. I've just had an e-Mail from my local branch of a well known pub chain. It concludes with this:

"It goes without saying we're taking this extremely seriously and that yours' and our teams' safety is our highest priority and we are doing everything we can to ensure you can confidently visit us."

After years of putting up with his detractors calling him a buffoon, Boris delivered a measured, mature, message to the people of Britain. I doubt whether any other Country has had such a concise, intelligent, and informative peroration from it's Government head. Again recognition of a public servant, and man on top of his game, is reserved for the very business-like Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer.
