I have, so here’s hoping.

// The coronavirus could have infected as much as half of the the UK’s population, according to researchers at the University of Oxford. If accurate, the results would mean the country has already acquired substantial “herd immunity” through the unrecognised spread of the illness.

The shutdown across the UK could be removed much sooner expected if the findings are confirmed //

A light on the horizon perhaps?

// But they're not asking you specifically, Jim.//

er his knowledge is first class so his answers are first class
Jim hasnt just got Physics CSE you know !

yeah you do know - you are just pretending you dont for the sake of discussion, you little minx !

//Isn't the point of Answerbank that questions aren't asked to any specific person? //

You'd do well to remember that.
Thanks, PP. Still, let's just assume that Naomi knows what my achievements are from now on.

Ah, N: but "anyone can answer" isn't remotely the same as suggesting that all answers are of equal status, is it? Nice try, though :)
Jim hasnt just got Physics CSE you kno

Is a City and Guilds in engineering gained at technical college any good, PP ?
PP, only 5% of corona patients survive on a ventilator'
50% of non corona survive them.
Where are you getting your stats from?
you could roll it up and put it by the door to keep the wind out, TonyAV. Which is more than you could do with my Nobel Prize medal.

//"anyone can answer"//

I didn't say that so where the quotes came from is anyone's guess... but they can. That's not to say that they're obliged to accept any answer they may receive. Some people - as demonstrated in the global warming thread that caused you to complain - don't hold the same opinions as you, Jim, and you should respect that - but you don't.
no or yes
I gave a deeply thought out answer
linking Boccaccios Decameron Shakespeare and Marlow

and a few other people with long forrin names - so long that people have fallen asleep whilst saying them

and some sulky spitfire hissed er sleepily - I was asking X

the ingratitude ! Midnight and the Beeb - oh god some of the hacks are so innumerate they dont grasp what a doubling time is
but heck that doesnt stop them blaarting
it kinda reminds me of AB ! ter daaah !

eek ! Pres of the college of ICM says the staffing ratio in ITU will go down to less than one per (ventilator) bed - oo er that is associated with an increased mortality - ho hum ....

Well thank God that it has some use ( besides earning me a living ) then JNO.
or if you've got damp patches on the wall, that sort of thing. And people say education's a waste of time.
Theres always a use for certificates especially in these day's of toilet roll shortages.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I always respect that. People are not, however, entitled to their own facts.

Jim, You’ve told me what I may or may not say. How is that respecting other people’s opinions? The thing is you bleat on about how desperately you are trying to communicate ‘how science works’, but no one has asked you to try to communicate that - and frankly few care. That is a mission you’ve taken upon yourself. People come here for a natter, to toss ideas around. They don’t come here to be lectured. Most of them couldn’t give a hoot ‘how science works’. They simply want to discuss their interests and curiosities and if that means extolling the virtues of the medicinal values of crystals, or the magical benefits of dancing naked around Stonehenge in the moonlight, or alien abduction, none of which have an iota of scientific backing, so be it. I would dearly love to say you are not the arbitrator but unfortunately I’d be wrong. The bottom line is your personal ‘mission’ - and that is all it is - has resulted in deterring others from saying what they would like to say - and to what end? To satisfy you. No one here is trying to change the world, Jim.
I come here to offer the benefit of my experience. Nobody needed to ask for that. The idea that such experience should be unwelcome, counterproductive to an informed discussion, beggars belief.
Also, if you don't care about how science works, then stop pretending that you're wanting to discuss Science. By definition, you clearly do not.
You know the expression 'Time to draw a line under it and move on'?

It's that time.
It was past that time years ago, I fear. :(

It beggars your belief - not mine. People want to talk about what they want to talk about - not about what you deem suitable. You fail to understand that you’re not nearly as important to them as you are to you.

//stop pretending that you're wanting to discuss Science. By definition, you clearly do not. //

There you go again.
People remain free to talk about it. But if they wish to do so, then they should stop pretending that it has anything to do with Science. I think that's a worthwhile distinction to draw -- especially in the face of times like these, when the role of expertise and evidence in debate is vital.

Returning to the OP, for example, the key point of offering up an article like this ought to be to discuss whether the current policy is working or appropriate. It's not some mere curio. In that case, critical evaluation is vital. The meta-debate about whether or not this is Science is neither here nor there; criticism should be welcomed because we *need* to understand the nature and the threat of the disease before us.

A proper appreciation of the merits, or otherwise, of various studies is critical.
