She needed to keep herself in the public eye, so shes now an expert in virology.

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/apr/29/greta-thunberg-launches-campaign-fight-coronavirus/

\\Thunberg said in a statement that “like the climate crisis, the coronavirus pandemic is a child-rights crisis” that will affect youngsters now and in the long-term, especially the most vulnerable.//

Childs rights ?, its affecting everyone.

//She's not wrong about climate change,...// She's wrong insofar as her criticism should be directed towards those who are exacerbating the problem to the greatest degree. That is China (30% of global emissions) the USA (14%) and India (7%). That's half of all global emissions. The UK is responsible for just over 1%. It could reduce its share to nothing...

Nickor - // If someone opened a door for me because it suited them, but it suited me too, I wouldn’t consider myself manipulated. //

If you were a mature adult, able to make rational decisions about issues that affect you, I wouldn't consider you manipulated either.

Greta Thunberg is neither of those - that's where the manipulation come in.

Suited her or her handlers, remember she was only 16 when she started and children are easily manipulate, esspecialy those with autism...............I know.
Greta Thunburg is the equivalent of a circus elephant sitting on a drum.

She doesn't protest, but it's clear that this is not where she belongs, or should be doing, or is happy, and unscrupulous people have had a hand in putting her where she is, for their own benefit, rather than hers.
Andy, do you consider that she is unable to make rational decisions about issues that affect her because of her age, her condition, or both?
\\\\douglas - // Ahh, okay, do as I say, not as I do. With you now. //

You will need to advise to whom that is aimed, in order for it to make sense.\\\\

Andy's cloud of mystery descends once more on the simplest of posts as he sits pretending to be dumbfounded as to the meaning.

It refers to you and you flexible rules of engagement Mr Hughes.

I imagine you compose much of your stuff while striding about the room, hand on hip, the other waving for emphasis like an actor of old.
No evidence of course, never having met you but I have held that view about you from the moment you appeared (on my screen), and I have seen no reason to adjust it in any way since.

Her age.

I am sometimes dumfounded, but I never pretend I am, and rarely on AB - more that I sometimes don't understand a post, the price paid for print communication, which I accept and work around happily.

Please let me put you straight then.

I am far too idle and indolent to be 'striding' anywhere!

I sit in my satin smoking jacket, with my monogrammed ballet slippers on the coffee table, and I have both hands fully occupied - one is holding a china cup of tea, and other is waving a cigar languidly as I dictate my deathless prose to the next in an endless procession of nubile secretaries whom I replace on a weekly basis, tired as I am of their inability to type at the speed my fervent and mercurial mind dictates, and their inability to understand that I am always, always right.

Hope this helps.
Fair enough then, but I did get the sense of the scenario.

If you mean that I am a million miles from people who simply sit at a keyboard and type, then of course are quite right, I am far to clever, erudite, witty and essential to be so mundane.
Someone takes over the site at weekends.

Douglas seems think it is me - I couldn't possibly comment ...
I find it rather disgusting that old men attack a young person with ideals. What did you do, daddy, in the days when Global Warming was an obvious menace to humankind and all the bad people denied it or ignored it?

She started a lot earlier than that, Webbo. Cribbed from Wiki (and confirmed by her mother in her latest book):

"Thunberg says she first heard about climate change in 2011, when she was eight years old, and could not understand why so little was being done about it. The situation made her depressed. She stopped talking and eating, and lost ten kilograms (22 lb) in two months. Eventually, she was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), and selective mutism. In one of her first speeches demanding climate action, Thunberg described the selective mutism aspect of her condition as meaning she "only speaks when necessary".

Instead of tackling the problems their daughter had her parents merely indulged her:

"For about two years, Thunberg challenged her parents to lower the family's carbon footprint and overall impact on the environment by becoming vegan, upcycling, and giving up flying. She has said she tried showing them graphs and data, but when that did not work, she warned her family that they were stealing her future. Giving up flying in part meant her mother had to give up her international career as an opera singer. Interviewed in December 2019 by the BBC, her father said his wife stopped flying to try to 'save' their daughter rather than the climate. He added: "To be honest, (her mother) didn't do it to save the climate. She did it to save her child because she saw how much it meant to her, and then, when she did that, she saw how much (Greta) grew from that, how much energy she got from it."

Frankly her childhood problems were handled appallingly by her parents. An eight year old child suffering from depression needs treatment and support, not simply indulgence. There is no way they should have altered their lifestyle to such a degree. It is terribly sad to see a teenage girl displaying such symptoms and she can only be described as a mental and emotional wreck.

I have a nephew who, when he was about ten, was taught about "germs" and their dangers in school. It had a profound effect on him. He became withdrawn, would not have a window open and would rarely go out. He was knocked into shape by his parents (ably assisted by his aunt and uncle) who diverted his attentions elsewhere. Now he is as normal as me (Oh! Hang on!). But seriously, the childhood treatment of Ms T is bordering on criminal. And now her very troubled mind has another burden to trouble it even further.
Disgusting indeed, Atheist...... :-(
Atheist - // I find it rather disgusting that old men attack a young person with ideals. What did you do, daddy, in the days when Global Warming was an obvious menace to humankind and all the bad people denied it or ignored it? //

First of all, being 'old' does not prevent anyone from 'attacking' anyone - I personally draw the line at that description, because I do not believe I have ever 'attacked' Greta Thunberg. the vast majority of my vitriol being reserved for the immoral and avaricious individuals she is unfortunate enough to have as parents.

Secondly, being 'young' does not render anyone immune from criticism.

If you are going to put yourself in the public eye - or in the case of Ms Thunberg, be put there by others - then it follows that not everyone is going to like what you have to say, and they are going to express their right to say so.

If you think it is wrong that Ms Thunberg is criticised, then you need to direct your ire towards her parents and associates, who facilitate her public persona, and expose her to such reactions.
good piece, that, NickorWan.

“How dare you talk to me like that, young lady? I’m jetting off to the US for a steak supper to teach you a lesson. In fact, I may eat a whole cow.

"And as for that transatlantic sailing trip, well, you can forget about that. You are GROUNDED. Think of it as my contribution to reducing the family’s carbon footprint.”
gness - // Disgusting indeed, Atheist...... :-( //

I respectfully refer you to my post at 20:08.

She arranged her own small protest, people got wind of it, and it snowballed from there. That's a bandwagon, though -- not manipulation. World leaders (well, some of them) want to meet her for more or less the same reason they do anything, because it looks good. Still not manipulation. Perhaps compare to Captain Tom, in a way. Is he being manipulated, or do people merely recognise a heartwarming (or, at any rate, a major) story and want to be a part of it?
