//why is the public so taken with this child? //

Because unlike most children who go missing, she was only three years old.
I think her middle class parents have more bearing than her age. They are media gold.
I think it's both of those things ^ ^ and so much more. All the twists and turns you just couldn't make it up.
I hope they get closure but this latest news must be there worst nightmare.
Oppps - their worst nightmare.
You might as well ask how did Mrs Lawrence harness the press and publicity to get the killers of her son bought to justice and manage to tarnish the integrity of every copper in the Met at the same time.I suppose it’s desperation and hope and in some cases it helps.
The media is interested because the public are interested. You only have to see how long the Madeleine threads get on AB every time her case has a new development to know what's in it for the media.
All tomorrows newspapers have a photo of the German suspect on their front cover.
On the BBC website, they have censored every front page to obliterate the picture.

isn't that censoring the press? :-))

So a German male is the alleged perpetrator. So who thought all along that the McCanns had killed her? I must confess i was one of them. I just couldn't get my head round them leaving a 3year old alone while they went out.
Leaving a child while you ate compared to murdering a child. Is there a comparison?
Gromit, at the very beginning of your link, beneath the date, the BEEB explain that owing to German privacy law and the website being available in Germany, they have blacked out the suspect's image.
I do hope this suspect is the one who took Madeleine.
"So who thought all along that the McCanns had killed her? I must confess i was one of them."

Then you didn't employ much in the way of thinking.

You should have thought it through a little more and you'd have quickly came to the conclusion that it was stupid. How did they so successfully dispose of the body? How did they manage to dupe the police? Etc...
The McCanns didn't leave their holiday let until 8.30pm on the evening Madeleine disappeared, along with others in their group, one couple of whom also left their children alone. Kate and Gerry and another in their group had taken it in turns to check on Madeleine until she was found to be missing by Kate at 10pm. That makes it 1.5 hours that the three siblings were left
Sorry hand slipped didn't mean to post yet. I was trying to make the point to people like Piggy who thought they left them on their own for hours when they didn't. The children were checked on in that 1.5 hours but unfortunately I think it was the last person to check before Kate had not looked in the bedroom to actually see the children. He had just listened to make sure all was quiet, no crying, when he should have opened the bedroom door and checked they were all there. Thus the police were unable to be sure of the exact time Madeleine was taken.
As has been pointed out, if they had killed their own children they would stay quiet, not spend years keeping the case open.
Glad to get that off my chest.

Good ol' DD straight for the jugular! Its so good to know you're so well informed and have all the answers. $64,000 question. How did they did they dispose of her body? Maybe they didn't.

I don't believe there is a parallel, except for the media interest, I am obviously not going to sideline the thread into the rights and wrongs of Mrs Lawrence's approach here.

If we are talking about media response, then your comparison does not hold up.

Eight pages in the Mail yesterday, nine today - I am sure Mrs Lawrence would have dreamed of that level and intensity of coverage for her son's murder.

The notion that the Lawrences are 'middle class' and that somehow sustains the interest is again not valid - the coverage now is not about them, it is about a suspect, and it brings me back to my original question - why the media furore over this one child?

I understand that the media prints what the public want to read, so again - why is the public so obsessed?
andy- I assume you meant the McCann's are middle class (you said the Lawrences)
fiction - // andy- I assume you meant the McCann's are middle class (you said the Lawrences) //

I did - my apologies all - brain ahead of fingers once again.

Thanks for the spot ff.
