Anthony Joshua, Don't Use 'White' Shops

If Tyson had said that white people should not use black or Asian owned shops, there would be mass hysteria and he would've been hounded out of town.
So how come AJ can say such things and get away with it, double standards or what!

I guess the difference is that "systematic" is synonymous with "methodical, organised", etc, whereas "systemic" is closer in meaning to "inherent".

That's not what I am saying at all. Issues of systemic racism won't disappear just by wishing them away. Sometimes that means introducing measures that look themselves imbalanced, but it's about correcting the issue, not replacing it with a new one.

In Joshua's case, it's also selective quoting. Framing it as a statement against white-owned businesses is unfortunate, but the next line turns it around rather: "if you want to uplift yourselves, invest in your own businesses."

Tyson hates Joshua and Joshua hates Tyson. Tyson is not calling Joshua out for his racist remarks. He is bemoaning the fact that he would not get away with similar statements.

Thank you for the link, naomi, I hadn't heard this story. At the top of the link it says:

It doesn't say any more about how it was taken out of context, and I haven't heard the speech, but the rest of the article then seems to be about Tyson Fury's reaction to the out of context bit - which is what you'd expect a boxer's PR machine come up with. We can't have Joshua in the news without Fury also getting some column inches on the back of it ...

Well, whatever. One has to understand where the anger behind Joshua's speech comes from; even if then you disagree with his response there is a difference between the two suggestions. You must be aware that there's an asymmetry between how UK society as a whole treats BAME and White people, and that merely wishing it away won't move things fast enough to where they should be.

Thanks, naomi. Weird speech. It seems to start in the middle, and doesn't make a lot of sense. Load of carp, really. I agree it doesn't look like his comments have been taken out of context, except that his comment was:

There's nothing wrong with "invest in black-owned businesses", it doesn't say only invest in black-owned businesses.

There looks to be a lot wrong with "Show them where it hurts, abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies". But it's not clear from the rest of the speech who "them" and "their" refers to. Is it white people? Or is it racists? It's a very poor speech. If Joshua claims he's being misunderstood then on balance he's probably telling the truth. He knew the speech was being filmed, so why would he say something he was then going to refute?
