Why Cant They Just Let The Virus Rip Through The Universities?
They are all young so they will have very mild symptoms and by the time they get home they will all have had it.

The notion that young people are suddenly being slain in their thousands is fanciful.
Current figures for the UK show that 89.3% of those who have died were aged 65 and over. Another 9.5% were aged 45 to 64, leaving just 1.2% aged under 45. There have been just four deaths of children aged 14 or under.
The article that Danny provides a link to says that 759 people aged under 50 in the USA. There have been 208,000 deaths in the USA, so the 759 represent just 0.36% - a much lower proportion than in the UK. It is simply no use running headlines such as "Young people are developing Covid-19 at significant rates—and hundreds have died" unless those figures are put into perspective. Of course hundreds have died - probably many thousands worldwide. But the risk of serious symptoms or death among the young is tiny.

No of course we shouldn't. But the plain fact is that they are very, very unlikely to do so. The strategy of trying to keep everybody free of the virus because some people will suffer seriously is flawed. The people who need to be protected (and who feel the need of that protection) should receive it - properly. But essentially everybody must be given the information to help them make their own decision. Keeping people away from each other by law is not sustainable either nationally or locally and in any case as soon as they are "released" the virus will resume its spread. To keep on doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different outcomes borders on lunacy.

Exactly Cloverjo, but the students DON'T do what you have quite rightly suggested and that is the problem in a world of a very contagious in which the only defence is quarantine and arguably a dodgy isolation programme.
One doesn't need statistics one needs to see and read about what is going on in the cities,towns and gatherings.
Students may not get it but they can certainly transmit it..even to granny..

Unfortunately it's the only game in town until politicians figure out a way to back up gracefully without admitting their catastophic error.
There will be no blame laid at their collective door if it can possibly be avoided.
They also need to overcome their addiction to control, not an easy thing to do for egomniacs.

It is my opinion that any student that wishes to carry on their studies should be allowed to go back in, and back out again too.
But there again, I am of similar opinion for the adult population. If they want to continue working, let them go in to work where any half decent or better employer will have provided the resources to do the job, and not merely officially employed someone but in reality expect them to provide their own working conditions as if they were hired as self employed contractors.
As for those who are considered vulnerable, let them take precautions and the authorities should help them to do so.

The virus will rip through the universities and they will ask the students to isolate, but most of them won't (unless locked in their rooms) and the virus will keep spreading.
