like everything ban it and it becomes all the more desirable, like prohibition, or banning cig in pubs, i know you cant smoke in pubs now, but going on the detritus outside people still go on smoking.
LoL, Roy.....great minds, and all that.... :o)
JTH; firearms I could understand; fireworks aren't quite in the same league. Seriously, what do you have against them?
Talking of starlings, thousands and thousands of them used to roost every day in Birmingham city centre. The sky would go dark during their murmuration and their droppings would rain down on all and sundry. Their droppings caused buildings to erode and made pavements treacherous. Then they disappeared. Where did they go? Why? Nobody knows
What!?!
I am sure you can imagine some of the reasons I might want to see them taken out of the hands of all but registered and trained handlers?
barry same with those disease ridden pigeons in the capital, the mess they make
I said 'personally' and 'would rather' Atheist. My son is on the spectrum and loud noises upset him. But many people feel the same way so no reaskn to single me out.
they're still going off down here....maybe we have a different NYE to the rest of you - I'm amazed that Plymouth doesn't emulate those eejits in Sydney trying to send the SH Bridge into space every year. The Tamar one is much smaller - I think.
Tigger, I didn't mean to single you out, apart from the fact that I was responding to your post. Now I know why you think they should be not made availale to Joe public.
JTH; I can't really see why they should be taken out of the hands of non-experts. I can sort of see a case for it, but we threw penny bangers around on bonfire night, and did lots of other dangerous things; it was part of being kids rather than 'snowflakes'. When you were that age you might have regarded people like you as old fogeys who didn't understand about fun and thrills.
A lot of people want them banned from general sale to the public because they fall into the hands of idiots who cause many, many problems every year. They are thrown at policemen and firefighters trying to do their jobs, domestic animals, usually cats, are tortured by them, they are set off weeks before and weeks after bonfire night at all times of the night and sometimes in the day time. I know many dogs who are terrified of them and their lives become living hell as they try, but can't, escape the noise. Need I go on .... ? These comments are repeated year on year and every respective government ignores them and ignores the firefighters and police who also lobby the governments to DO SOMETHING !! I personally don't think they will ever be banned for sale to the general public, but I'll keep on signing petitions until I have no breath left in my body !
It isn't kids though...it is fully grown idiots.
I just wonder what part Piers Corbyn plays in this mayhem.
My other reasons which I have mentioned in the past on AB is that some kids let a firework off on my road as I was walking home. It went off sideways and whizzed past me missing me by inches. Ive also heard horror stories of them being tied to cats, kittens and other animals. I know cars kill birds but it's their natural instinct to kill.
You (and many of the boys I knew who did that, at the same age) are exactly the sort of eejits to whom I am referring.
Did you, or any of your friends, lose an eye, or part of a finger to the 'penny-bangers' (surely the most pointless of *all* fireworks as it's sole purpose is to go BANG), or did you enjoy throwing them in the direction of groups of other children to scare them?
Not wishing children to have dangerous, potential life-altering 'toys' is not condemning them to be snowflakes and nor is it evidence of 'old-fogeyism'.
this is about balance, - fireworks for major events, well-publicised so that folk can prepare, handled by sensible people, well trained etc etc...keep them away from the ijiots.....having said this, remember this so-called professional event.

then there was this one in the States, San Diego on July 4..... https://www.buzzfeed.com/catesish/san-diego-really-screwed-up-their-fireworks-displa
Do you really think that banning them would stop them, or perhaps encourage people to make their own? Imagine that. In the daft video game minecraft there is even a task where you need to make your own. Kids are playing that right now. Some people just lurve legislation for the sake of it but have no concept of cause and effect. Apart from even more legislation. Get over yourselves.
*cats can kill birds, not cars!
What sort of car have you got, Tigger?
sorry, here's the Oban one
