Why is the SNP wasting effort and resources on pursuing an illegal "referendum" when they should be fighting the war on COVID-19 with the rest of the UK?

All you English"Scots"should come up and live in Scotland.A couple of days in the Weegieland slums, and you would be back to England in a flash,at the same time building a new Hadrians Wall behind you.Scotland sure aint a land of milk and honey with the yokels munching on heather and living next-door to Brigadoon.

Some might say that Scotland already has the cow, but can she provide the cash?
It seems many want to swap that cow for a handful of beans, Jackdaw ... which I doubt very much will prove to be magical.
//That said, the Scottish Independence referendum took place before Brexit was more than a twinkle in Nigel’s eye,...//

No it didn't Naomi.

By 2012 there was growing unease at the UK's continued EU membership. As I've previously pointed out, as early as January 2013, Mr Cameron (under pressure from the rising popularity of UKIP and a sizeable chunk of his own party) promised that, should the Conservatives win the 2015 General Election, he would renegotiate the UK's relationship with the EU and call a referendum based on the new terms.

So when they voted in September 2014 it should have been clear to the Scots that there was a possibility that the UK would leave the EU. If they didn't take that possibility into account they should have; if they took it into account but dismissed it as to be so unlikely as not to be worth worrying about they were wrong. Either way, they had fair warning. There was obviously far more to keep them in the UK than the threat of the UK leaving the EU would persuade them to leave.

I don't particularly care whether Scotland holds another referendum or, if they do, what the result is. But to ride on the back of what they say is a material difference is disingenuous as they should have taken the likelihood of such a change into account. They can't really expect a fresh referendum every time the UK (of which they voted to remain part of) takes a decision with which some of them do not agree.
A figure of speech, NJ, but at that time a EU referendum was not envisaged ‘any time soon’. When it was eventually sanctioned I think it fair to say that few expected the outcome to be as it was - and I include the Scots in that. Although personally I think the Nationalists are in danger of making the biggest mistake of their lives, now the status quo has changed I can understand them wanting another bash at it… but perhaps that’s just me.
I think they'd want another go at it if Boris Johnson changed his soap powder, Naomi. That's the nature of things.

Yes I agree, I think the Scots would be making a grave mistake. Hopefully there will be enough of them to realise it. The only thing I hope is that if they do go their separate way, it doesn't cost taxpayers from the rest of the UK a shedload of money "to tide them over" because they will need something to do that for sure.

If I was a Scottish voter I couldn't possibly vote for independence because I simply could not be confident that the country would be able to sustain itself. As much as the Scots may like to dismiss the idea, Scotland relies on huge and disproportionate funding from the UK Exchequer. That's not a debate, it's a simple fact. Where the shortfall will come from, what Scotland will do for currency and how it will fund all the facilities that are currently funded from the UK budget has not been explained.

judge: "As much as the Scots may like to dismiss the idea, Scotland relies on huge and disproportionate funding from the UK Exchequer. That's not a debate, it's a simple fact." - indeed, in fact their Chancellor bemoaned the UK contribution in their budget last week, how's it going to work out when they get sweet FA?

currency? well they say they'll continue with the pound. They can of course but they'll have no control over it. If they get admitted to the EUSSR they'll be forced into the Euro. Thus Currency exchange fees will become another expense when buying things not in Euros.
No problem, tora.Once Scotland gets independence all the unemployed, unemployable Weegies and Dundonians will all rush out to find meaningful employment, and all will be ginger-peachy.Aye,******* right.
Actually, NJ, we'd want another go at it, even if his soap powder rejected Boris Johnson, as it well might!
...and we probably will,Quizzy, but only in a generations time as promised by Randy Alec.
Quizmonster, I really don’t care whether Scotland remains within the union or not but when I read vitriolic posts like yours I experience those moments when I sincerely wish you enormous success.
//currency? well they say they'll continue with the pound. They can of course but they'll have no control over it.//

Yes I know that's what they've said, Tora. What they haven't explained too well (or at all as far as I can see) is what are they going to buy their pounds with? They can only buy them with other pounds and they will very quickly run out.
What do you expect from nationalists,Naomi?Hatred comes with the territory.

17:19, good point judge, perhaps one of our resident indies will explain.
"Vitriolic", Naomi? I just thought of what you object to as a bit of light-hearted surrealism! Whether or no, thanks for your well-wishes.

yn, You still don't get it, do you? Alec made no such promise as you and others seem to imagine he did. Please read my earlier posts on this thread to discover the truth. That's if you really care about the truth.
My sister-in-law (living in Ayrshire) is firmly of the opinion that an independent Scotland couldn't have supported its' citizens, financially, through this Covid crisis.
The 'Scottish' Oil Industry (I know! I know!) wouldn't have supplied sufficient immediate returns to do so, and the Shortbread/Edinburgh Rock sales, being decimated through lack of ingredients/customers, would have been similarly hard-pressed.
^^ Scotch whisky also isn't as popular as it once was, even the Japanese are making whisky now & the younger generations prefer the white spirits, gin & vodka
I'm sure he stands up sometime
I dinae Ken spicey, he never seems to have a leg tae stand on
