"Most people clean their houses/kitchens to the standards required."
Can I ask what you are basing this statement on?

"The way Barry is talking you'd think peoples houses were over ran with mice and cockroaches"
I have visited loads (probably thousands) of houses as part of my job and its an eye opener, as are many people's standards of personal hygiene....think about the furore when the covid "wash your hands" advice was published.
i had mice and cockroaches at different times, not because i wasn't cleaning properly, but the neighbours flat below me were riddled with cockroaches, and they infested the block. the mice because the engineers who installed the hot water system in the basement disturbed a nest of mice and they ran riot over the building. i still shudder at the thought of this happening again.
Would I buy food as sold by my locals ?
No, I would not ,for the reasons shown but primarily I'd leave it to proper businesses and those that are well established, not the ones that pop up on FB to make a quick buck !

Would you accept a couple of homemade jars of jam or chutney from a friend?
If the gov makes restrictions that limit regular supplies & force people into idleness then of course some will exploit ways to circumvent it (e.g. USA Prohibition!).

I would not buy cooked food from dubious sources & I doubt if many (any) around here are running such businesses. I'm a good enough cook myself.
Drmorgan , what could possibly go wrong with a jar of preservative? But saying as you ask, you did say ' friend' so I'd know that person, so my answer is, Yes, I would
Bobbi would that be wood preservative?
