George VI and Queen Mother disapproved of Elizabeth's choice because he had a raucous laugh - like Elizabeth herself and didn't behave in a 'regal' manner. They didn't think he'd fit in to royal life.
He may have had to walk behind the Queen in public, but apparently he was the boss 'at home', and that's the way the Queen wanted it.

He apparently expressed a wish for a low profile funeral. That doesn't surprise me - he was a down to earth man. I thought he was great and loved his sense of humour. Please don't let this thread be about Harry or Megan. Who cares whether they come over or not.
I personally feel very sorry indeed for our Queen.

Lankeela, the title of this thread is fine, not blunt at all.
The Duke has died, he’s dead, what else could be said?
We both feel very sad about his death, I think he was a great bloke and spoke his mind as much as he was able to, given the constraints of being a Royal.
Poor old queenie, she won’t half miss him.

I left the radio on when I went out on a dog walk tiggs and as I walked back in I heard the presenter say 'as a mark of respect to the Duke' and I knew immediately Philip had died. I actually burst out crying, not only because it's sad when a loved one dies and you know they will be missed, but I remember his face when he came out of hospital and it reminded me totally of my beloved Dad a few weeks before he died and I knew the Duke didn't have long left.
