Why do we need a disaster to tell us something isn't going to work? "Smart" motorways and now unguided steel missiles, madness.

Smart motorways are a disaster, they are dangerous and should be abandoned and who ever thought them up should be disciplined.

this drives me mad!
I just don't get what the purpose of this is beyond technology buffs trying to come up with something new for the sake of it. If you don't want to drive a car yourself catch a coach.
it is utter madness, i don't drive but even i can tell that the technology for driverless cars is no where near complete.

it's madness and pointless, if you have to be ready to take charge what's the kin point? I'd rather drive the thing myself.
I do wonder what the point is. Use the tech for driver assist but nothing more, the tech is simply not there at the moment and they are playing with lives.

If they can't get the so called Smart Motorways to be smart just what hope is there of controlling 2 tons of metal at 70mph?
Good news for over 70s whose driving licences seem to be coming under threat. (if it extends their 'freedom')
I'm sure eventually self driving cars will become the norm and lead to much safer roads. ( if the great reset doesn't push everyone but the billionaires off the road)
// if the great reset doesn't push everyone but the billionaires off the road//

That is most likely to happen given the numpty green agenda being pushed. Travel will only be for the super rich.

spicerack; "Good news for over 70s whose driving licences seem to be coming under threat. (if it extends their 'freedom')" - unless we get true automation, ie never, this will make no difference, OAPs will still have to be qualified to sit in the driving seat.
Invest now in country pubs! When your car can drive you home from them, they'll become more popular again. As long as you can drink indoors without a face mask by then ...
Once humans aren't driving at all things will be a lot safer, until then we have the crossover period which are going to be 'interesting' to say the least.

I can see in future some roads or lanes will become autonomous only and human only to try and keep things sensible.

Is'nt this just an interim step tho ToraToraTora until (if ever) the trials and tests show its safe to make them completeley driverless

the bloke from DOT is on the roger now. It's apparently only up to 38MPH on Motorways! I fear for motorcycles.
If it's only up to 37 mph (why do we have to adhere to 60 kph?) and on motorways then it will only be used in slow-moving tailback conditions. Even with very heavy traffic on the M6 Birmingham I've never seen the speed limit sign drop below 40 mph.
If you were doing 37 on a clear motorway the plod would pull you over & make some enquiries!
Your forgetting TTT that lots of accidents happen with humans driving nonautonamous cars. My prediction is that driverless cars will be safer than cars with drivers provided its on roads without cyclists and pedestrians (and maybe without cars with drivers) but that doesnt solve the problem of local roads. Worth a try though.

bob; "Is'nt this just an interim step tho ToraToraTora until (if ever) the trials and tests show its safe to make them completely driverless" - you mean they are testing using the lives of the public? Quite possibly. The problem is that there is no such thing as an autonomous car but, as demonstrated by those wallies in the Tesla the other week, the thickos of the world think there is. My worry is that this will be used in the wrong places and conditions and cause carnage. I fear for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Planes are flown by computers, the pilots don't do much.

bob: "My prediction is that driverless cars will be safer than cars with drivers provided its on roads without cyclists and pedestrians " - It has a chance on motorways, well that's the first area to aim at but we are still light years from even that.
//you mean they are testing using the lives of the public?//
How else can you test them.
Its like the covid vaccinne-it had to be tested on the public.
Question Author
barry: "Planes are flown by computers, the pilots don't do much." - yes but that is an infinitely simpler thing to do. Even so I'd still rather have a *** pilot fly me than a computer, 737 max??
