Nicola Sturgeon’s parents brought her up to be a nation isn’t like themselves! Since a small girl she has been brainwashed to focus on one thing - Scottish Independence. She conveniently forgets that it is The Barnett Formula that keeps Scotland afloat. She appears to believe that the EU are desperate for Scotland to join them. They told her before the first referendum that Scotland would have to wait (10 years I believe). She was also told Scotland would not be able to keep the £. What will Scotland live on? i couldn't support the IRA in anything, they tried to kill so many, and succeeded with wanton violence, i was working in various places in London when bombs were set off nearby. I can't understand Irish politics i confess, i know some of the history, but isn't it time they all got on with their lives. Bigotry is a nasty trait.

Sunk: Yes Scotland can have an advisory referendum like the UK one. The problem with that comparison is that, yes the UK referendum was advisory but the government pledged to implement the results and a legal path existed to do that. The government could of course have said thanks very much your opinion is noted and carried on. However that would have been politically impossible and political suicide, therefore the result was eventually implemented. The difference with the Scotland "advisory" referendum is that there is no legal path to implement the result and they would have to make that clear so it would be a waste of time and a legal turkey shoot would later ensue if any attempt at extrication was attempted. Better all round to seek validity in the first place.

Yes they can. The difference is that the advisory referendum held on EU membership was held by the UK government. That government pledged to fulfil the result and had the power to do so. Although the government which allowed the referendum departed before we left the EU, their successors (after a struggle) kept to the pledge.

The Scottish government has no such power. It knows it hasn't and is threatening to hold its advisory referendum so that (if the result goes its way) it can use that as leverage for an officially sanctioned vote. There is no question that constitutionally the Scottish government does not have the power to hold a binding referendum and the power to allow Scottish independence rests with Westminster. Declaring independence without the agreement of the Westminster Parliament would be seen as the sequel to "Passport to Pimlico":
