I think because in the past it was assumed you only got HIV if you were gay they the "ban" was put in place. With today's medical advances and testing surely anyone who is medically able could come forward to donate and after the blood is collected then be deemed fit for purpose

MM, exactly. The original reason- and without going into graphic details, is that gay men have a higher chance of contracting an STI- in exactly the same way that straight women do. Obvious mechanics. And for the same reasons. To put it bluntly, it's being a "receiver".
