Barmaid @ 19.29:
//There are some areas of Englands' past that I cannot be proud of. But I will not apologise. But I will try to understand and learn//
The link below is something from the recent past, that everybody should be ashamed of. These people are still trying to unite families, even this very day. My dad was very fortunate not to be one of them. Part one of The Independent Inquiry Into Child Abuse (still ongoing) dealt with this very topic. There was a film made about this called Oranges and Sunshine, starring Emily Watson as Nottingham social worker Margaret Humphries. Mrs Humphries still heads The Child Migrants' Trust. I'm not certain, but I think Tony Blair made an apology about this issue in the House of Commons in 1999.

No amount of vandalism to statues or buildings can alter this and I'm sure the apologies made already feel very hollow to those hurting.
A desperately sad state of affairs.

They have to do something: there are a large number of dead children. The legal question is more complex - the Great White Queen Empress negotiated thro ministers the treaties with the First Nations. They usually guaranteed indigenous rights. This also occurred in Oz ( where Roy from) and NZ.
And so there came a time when Justin's Dad ( Pierre Trudeau silly! ) sought "to bring the Canadian Constitution home" - because constitutional changes had to go through London. Big to-do and the Froggies in Quebec were revolting and this was a vote-getter.
And I regret Her Majesty's privy counsellors ( remember She was the one who signed the treaties - foo v diff for an ABer(*) asked what guarantees would the First Nations enjoy? Actually they demanded that the treaties were not abrogated by the Canadian govt any time later. And these guarantees were not forthcoming.
The constitution was not brought home.
so think of the irony Reader - the figure who protected their rights is now having her nose pushed into the loam.
c'est la vie - as they must say in Quebec ( comment on dit dans la Quebec - just teasing, Naomi)
(*) foo an awful lot of fooing detail, foos one of the usual suspects)
