My partner is from South Africa and her children are there. We used to go there every winter but obviously because of Covid this did not happen last winter. She has now booked to go back next month - but I did not. Now she is having doubts about going. Friends there, and in other parts of the world, think coming now is a very bad idea. In 'normal' times living in South...

thank you
"Kotzé asserted in open court the primacy of judicial interpretation of the Grondwet over the highest authority of the Volksraad (the legislative authority), that is, the sovereign authority that the state president and his Volksraad had always regarded as an unimpeachable constitutional guarantee."
I meant volksraad apparently
( I keep on getting screwed over a final sounded consonant b,d,v is pronounced p,d,f in botth Dutch and German) ( pl volksraden)
I hadnt realised ( above ) Kruger looked on the interpretative right as an obvious right and the British as an obvious way to gratuitously interfere with the process of Law
these things get clearer after around 100 y
why are we calling Zim, Rhodesia please - if you are stuck in the colonial era I cd understand SR

daniel finkelstein ( Lord that is! and journo) follows my lead in the times this am - op-ed on Cuba. The marxist common ownership is shot and yet the Beeb are keeping up the propaganda.
The Beeb are always able to find a marxist apologist fulll of exciting ideas that have been tried and failed

fender //zuma goes to prison so they loot a mall, now to do with zuma, but an excuse to steal, not unlike riots in the states over georgy floyd, see the parallel...//
There is a strong element of 'tribalism' involved here, which has being going on since time immemorial : Zuma is Zulu, imprisoning him has inevitably led to a flare-up, the fact he was corrupt as hell is immaterial to the tribe.
quote; "while it is easy to homogenize and talk about 'African people', the truth is that within these 54 separate and unique countries, there are in fact over 3000 diverse tribes! Perhaps South Africa best reflects this diversity through its constitution with all 11 official languages recognized by law." and all with historical issues with one another.
There was tribalism too involved in the Floyd incident, but that was much simpler, - black v. white.

The warehouse featured in the link at 9.32 is one of five warehouses that are part of the FFSA (Food Forward South Africa) organisation whose aim is to provide food and meals for the vulnerable and incapacitated with a mission statement that is to "End Hunger In South Africa". FFSA has since ceased to operate after all such facilities were looted. It used to distribute food to the impoverished populace of South Africa. More than ½ million vulnerable people relied on the charity to eat. As well as stripping the 5 warehouses of all supplies(some perishable, hence the looting of freezers and fridges) the vehicles used to make deliveries or collections were stolen or torched, including refrigerated trucks that cost about a million quid each(Harry Potterish that). When the infomercials kick in at Christmas to help the victims of white oppression will you be "making a donation"?
My brother sent footage of him trying (without success)to purchase food, get petrol, draw cash. Crazy.
Family living there believe it may be EFF (an extreme political party) trying to destabilise the country to lead into being able to stage a coup.
Or alternatively factions within the anc government trying to destabilise rhamaposa (the state president).
All say it was far too well orchestrated to be simply looting.

talking with some some people who lived in south africa have said to me, is was better under apartheid, law and order and prosperous.
but that not politically correct these days, i dont know as i never lived there or have family there, but tribalism being what it is, has no place in the modern world so to speak, well no good for there economy. and murdering white farmers sends a signal to possible investors that its just not safe.

In 'normal' times living in South Africa is a culture shock to anyone not familaiar with the country. Her home is like a mini fortress with electric fenes and gates, razor wire and security cameras. At home you carrya panic button and memorise the codes for doors and the gun safe.
Cars have shatter proof side windows and you NEVER drive with an open window. You rarely shop anywhere but the large shopping malls
where guards patrol the car park.
We usually go to her timeshare on the Indian ocean coast. But it is situated only about 20 kilometers from Durban which, occording to many sources, is looking like a war zone.
Only reason I go there is the weather.
