Nothing new in that sp 1814, England has always been racist, but now, more black people are in the public eye and hence racial abuse is becoming the norm.

Might be they speak out about it more, and the authorities and media are more likely to respond. More black celebrities so there are spokespeople who already have a media profile, and a sense that accusations of racial bias can not be challenged. Many have suffered, but it now seems to be a stick to beat everyone else with.

But black celebrities get racist abuse even when they've done nothing wrong. Perhaps the issue is that racists are able to hide on behind social media profiles whereas before they didn't have ready access, a direct line to those they wanted to abuse?

I suspect social media have greatly amplified something that was previously heard just in pubs*. Also, as someone said, there are more obviously successful BAME people to get into an envious rage about.
