Any abuse is unacceptable, from the fatty and four eyes labels amongst kids bullying each other, to the racist abuse under discussion here.
Flawed human nature will always keep abuse going, which is the low level anti social crime we abhor, and given the security of online anonymity it looks likely to continue.
Tracing the culprits would help.

I think theres probably a lot less racist abuse nowadays. Its just that it makes the news because of social media and is no longer tolerated

Try a Twitter search using the N-word ...then come back and report your findings.

When a monkey emoji appears on my twitter feed I can almost guarantee it is from someone writing in Arabic.

Answerbank is now overloaded with race-baiters. Hence I hardly bother with it anymore.

I suspect it was alway normal, and nothing new.

But bigots used to broadcast to a few of their mates, and now via social media, racists can broadcast to the 8 billion entire world.

Racist abuse is wrong but Brits have a habit of abusing prominent people who they think are lecturing them (as Lewis is prone to do) & and if said person happens to be from another ethnic group then that gets thrown into the mix.

I see what you're saying but it doesn't appear to be limited to black people who speak out - it happened to Idris Elba, Nadia Hussein, Motsi Mabuse, Leigh-Anne Pinnock - just by being black in the public eye now seems to guarantee racist abuse.

Same if you're a woman who 'steps out of line'. There are some real horror stories ("Hope you get raped" seems to crop up quite regularly).

Whilst social media platforms, unfortunately, give racists/homophobes/anti-semites, etc. opportunities to air their abhorent views, I am also gratified that, more often than not, these mouth-breathers are 'called-out' by other users.

Social media allows abuse to go on because of the anonymity. It is not restricted to racial abuse. All kinds of people have been abused in all kinds of ways. The people doing it are cowardly *****, but unfortunately there's alot of them about. Until it's easy to trace them, it will continue.

I've been abused on-line. Found him and he turned into a stuttering wreck. I felt embarrassed for him.
